Hello.
I cant for the life of me find any comparisons between the 4890 and the 6870, it seems the 4890 has just dropped off the face of the earth!

Can anyone help me out with any idea of whether it would be much of an upgrade? I dont really understand the performance comparisons between my card and the 5000 series, bit out of the loop :S

Thank you!

Seems the 6870 is within a few % of the 5870 and GTX470, faster than a 5850/GTX460. Either way you may not be blown away buy the performance increase, depending upon the res you game at, but they do support DX11 and are a lot cooler/quiter than the 4890. At a higher resolution it would be a geood upgrade

Here's some results from anandtech, the closest to the 6870 is the 5870 so that will have to do in comparison to a 4890, bare in mind with the latest shader intensive titles the 6870 will destroy the 4890 even more.

Crysis 52% faster with the 5870.

It runs cooler uses a hell of a lot less power, great card from AMD.

I'd say it would be worth the upgrade, especially as you have a buyer for the old card :)

Looking through some reviews, it looks like you would get a decent increase in performance.

For what it is worth, I shall be upgrading my 4850, 512mb to a 6870 in the next week or so too :)

Thanks so much for the quick responses guys! Raven, I had no idea you could do that sorta comparison! Awesome!

Cheers guys!

I'm looking at making the same jump from the 4890. There aren't many of my games that I can't play at 1920x1200 (I can hear the forumite's gasps of disbelief from here! :) ) but there are enough on the horizon that it is becoming an issue.

How do you work that out, it has to make 900 core to match the 6870 and still will perform worse because of the lower shader count, it's not going to go much over 900 core.

6850 can't match 6870 even at 900Mhz as you already have said but it starts at 775Mhz and goes all way to 900Mhz+ as for the 6870 is yet unsure of how much it can be overclocked without using voltmods. Maximum balanced I saw was 1.27v 1000Mhz.
