Well ive just upgraded my rig quite a bit and am very happy with it as it is much quieter than before. The Asus 4980 is the loudest thing in there now and just wondered what options I have for upgrading the cooler to something more less noisey.

Cheers

Why do so many ATI cards need after-market coolers?

If i'd just spent the thick end of £200 i'd expect it to be quiet and cool even while gaming, my GTX260 is.

As far as third party coolers go atm I am not aware of there being one. In the meantime you can fiddle with fan speeds/ratios in CCC or ATItool to see if you can get a good balance between performance and noise level.

Other options are W/C, improving case cooling (therefore less speed required on GFX fan) or some ghetto modding taking the shroud off and strapping a quieter fan to the heatsink

I wouldnt say its overly noisey unless really stress testing it at which point it gets to about 50% fan speed. Generally it stays at 30% on idle and 40% when gaming. I use my pc for movies aswell as general stuff so want to try and get it as quiet as possible that is all.

Thanks. Ive tried messing with the fan settings in CCC and set it to about 30% which im fairly happy with although it isnt silent. The problem there is that when gaming the temps get a little too hot. I stress tested it using furmark and it was going over 90 degrees at which point i quit out of it.

Isnt there some kind of 3rd party heatsink/cooler that can be used on the 4890 as I have seen these for the 4870 which is almost the same design?

May or may not fit, the 4870 and 4890 are effectively the same gpu with core revisions, not sure if the pcb layout or mounting holes have changed, would be worth an email to ATI or someone more in the know might be aware of this :)

I am thinking about taking the plunge back to ati again,so i did a bit of digging around and asked a manufacturer,
this was the response:-

"Dear Customer

Thank you for your interest at ZEROtherm® VGA cooler.

We recommend our top performance VGA cooler HC92 Cu series for ATI HD4890.

Basically, the cooler is compatible with ATI reference designed HD4890 and provide the best performance ever in current VGA coolers in the world."

also looks like the zalman VF1000 LED would fit ,which looks a better cooler to me anyway !

something deffo not going right here for you lot with temp problems.

mine never goes above 58C under load (35% odd fan speed max) and idle its around 30-35C (barely hear the fan).

surely a silly aftermarket cooler won't be better then the actual manufacture one? aftermarket coolers blow straight down on the card leaving the heat inside case, the manufacture 1 blows air out back of case in a concealed casing not allowing other components to get affected.

what are your room temperatures?
is your dekstop located next to a radiator/ electric heater?
