4890 or 275?

Having a graphics upgrade as a birthday present but I'm having trouble deciding which one.

Current spec is Q6600 at 3Ghz, 8Gb RAM and 8800GT running Vista ultimate 64.

Game benchmarks seem to suggest that the 275 has the edge?

I'm also concerned about how easy the ATI card will be in Fedora linux as my desktop is dual booted. My 8800GT has been easy to use with linux so far.

What do you reckon?

i'm in the same situation. Starying towards the 275 at the moment. Don't want to wait. Waiting is a mugs game with computer parts ( unless something is confirmed to be like a week around the corner)

Yeah I looked over loads of benchmarks and tbh I went for the ATI purely on the fact that they seem to have sorted out the nightmarish rep for bad drivers that was common years ago and that the past few cards I've had have been ATI.

Also, as in the other thread, I found that people saying that the 4890s are hot and noisy is a load of old tripe. I don't think there's much in it really, if you can save a few quid getting one over the other then go for it.
 
260 is Winrar. But if you have to have one of these newfangled cards, get a 275. The 4890 is noisy and won't play nicely in 'nix.

:o did you have it overclocked? Mine's fine, I can get away with manually setting the fan to about 25% and it's virtually silent, even in my Lian Li case. Temps on 29% hit 54*C max which is fine by me.
 
No, no overclock. My PC's on the desk and has a large vent in the side panel, but even at the lowest fan setting CCC would use, it was still noisier than my GTX260-216.

Fair enough... my case fans are louder than my card so I'm swapping those for 2x120mm Noctuas :p Maybe I'll notice it a bit more then but I think I'll get a decent case next month :D
 
To be honest after doing abit of research on the linux front, i think I'll have to go nvidia. Ati sounds a bit like hard work!

You can get a 4890 for less than that delivered, but then again, you can get 4770 x2 for less than that also. However one card does have less issues than 2. The other problem with those benchmarks is while faster, there wasn't a single resolution shown where the 4890 gave anything even remotely close to bad performance, the extra 20% from ever so slightly more expensive cards would be completely invisible to the user.
 
Sounds like linux driver issues are more important than random game performance for the poster anyhow - and there Nvidia still have a reasonable lead sadly.
 
afaik theres nothing wrong with ati's linux drivers anymore, as in, they work, they might not be as fast as their windows drivers but considering he's dual booting I'm assuming all gaming is done in windows anyway. a 4890 at £170 inc del, or a 275 at £200, for the same performance seems a very very easy choice for me.

To be honest i've done a quick mooch on the fedora (my distro of choice) forum site and there's several howtos for installing the ATI drivers, it does seem a bit more complicated than Nvidia and a lot of posters say that ATI is a pain compared to nvidia.

I don't intend to game on the linux boot, but I do play with 3D software like blender a bit so really want the proper drivers installed.

I'll continue to mull it over.
