i recently just got the Asus ATI Radeon HD 4890 1GB with the i7 overclocked 4.00ghz bundle pack, but when am browsing the web or playing games my screen seems to randomly reset itself. it just flashes on and off for a second or two. i replaced the 4890 with my old 3870x2 and i dont get the problem. any possible solution for this or somthing i may have done wrong?

In my experience this happens when the graphics card becomes unstable due to overclocking too far, and Windows resets the drivers.

Are you running it stock? What temperatures?

Catalyst will show your temps, and so will GPU-Z

GPU-Z also shows things like how much Amps are going through the card, and other useful things, including temps or each individual part of the card, fan speed, voltage, clock speeds...

When you say it flashes for a second or two, do you mean for that period? that quite a long time, when it flashes do you get a black screen? I only ask because I did a new build recently and everything was great, booted to the BIOS installed windows, and was doing well with no problems.....But as soon as I installed the drivers for my 4780 as soon as I opened an application utility or just browsed the net, my screen would flicker...It would flick for a split second, then a few seconds latter would flick again......the flick did not last for a period of 1 or 2 seconds though, but our problem does sound similar....
I have since sent my card back to clockers and it is still under going test...Hopefully I will just get a replacement......

ok just refitted the card and the gpu is running at 56.

tr0 it just stays blank for a second or two. then i get the icon of what input am using and it comes back.

Just browsing before I make a thread! And you have the perfect one. I am having a very similar issue, my dual 4890's seem to turn off their outputs if im on a game for a long time. Can still hear all the game sounds and windows etc, but the screens go into standby mode... Searching for a solution atm!

I also have 9.6, but unlike your issue my screens dont come back on... I have to reboot the pc to see them again :/

I'll be back in an hour... I have a theory about crashing at 70c. Few days back I noticed just before crash temp was at 70c and it turned off. Maybe need to RMA the card(s)?

My 4890 reaches 75 at full load, and so far haven't had a single crash, hopefully never will...

So i would say there is a problem

Seemed ok here, turned fans off to heat up card and it hit over 70 easily n continued playing cod 5, turned fans on and played it till now and no crash. Maybe drivers...

installed mine yesterday and loaded 9.6's didnt bother with card driver sbeforehand, no probs so afr, all running smooth, americas army is a bit of a hog though :P

I found your problem i think Cambel.

I been researching for a few hours, and have found that atikmdag is under discussion in quite a few threads.

Have you installed KB952287 windows update? Remove it and tell me if your problems stop.
