Hi 8-Pack / all,

Just purchased the 4960X cpu and currently trying to run it in a P9X79 Pro Rev 1.0. Latest BIOS with official IVY-E support.

Having a few stability issues although I think that may be a red herring with Nvidia drivers.


Starting from the top:

From coldTurn machine on, turns off almost immediately and then powers up again. CPU LED is lit and the MB states code 15. If you keep trying it will eventually POST, but state overclocking has failed.

All I have setup thus far is DRAM Timings and left most settings in auto.

Once posted the machine is stable, managed to play a couple of hours in game without any crashing - I had however had some hard lock ups with no BSOD but I'm fairly sure it was Nvidia driver related as rolled back to 314.22 and seemed fine after running a few 3D benches on loop.

Bare in mind this is all stock so no overclock involved.


I've had the MB since launch, and had no cold boot issues with my previous SB-E CPU. I obviously want the system 100% stable before I attempt any clocking! Previous CPU was stable at 4.8Ghz and had no issues so thinking it might be a case of a gammy BIOS on an ageing motherboard? Or maybe the CPU just isn't getting enough juice at stock volts?

System:

Windows 7 x64

2x 32GB Corsair Dominator 1600Mhz (Can't remember model but timings are 10-10-10-27)

4960x

ASUS P9X79 Pro Rev 1.0 (latest Ivybridge BIOS)

3x ASUS Titans

Enermax Revo 1500W

480 radiator on CPU only - dual bay res D5 pump.

1x Bluray writer

4x Samsung 840 Pro 256GB

64gb RAM oh dear!!

RIVE works amazing with the CPU so don't see it being an ageing board although the ROG team rule when it comes to bios support. Other ASUS bios teams are not so good.

VCCSA around 1.2v and VTT the same should sort out the cold boot.
 
Yeah I think maybe it's not supplying enough juice - it only occurred to me when I got to work :rolleyes:. I got one of the RAM kits free just FYI ;)

Will give it a go and start from there, as I say - had no issues with SB-E. Do you recommend leaving C states enabled as I know these can sometimes cause problems? I normally leave them in auto.

My feeling is that them being two seperate kits the SPD is slightly different on both so the CPU cold is finding it difficult to train. Would probably also work with manual timings on all dimms. Not just primarys but subs also.
 
Gah, same this morning. 3 or 4 boots and it fired up. Although your theory may still be right as I didn't really check the kits. No matter, will give it some more juice. It's definitely stable anywho so I guess it's a non issue
 
When you say three boots do you mean you have to switch off or do you mean its just powering up and down its self???

In the second instance this is not a problem at all its just ASUS memory training.
 
From cold: It'll power up then down instantly, then up again but no post. if you then turn off by hard power down and on again, you get the CPU LED and error 15. Turning on and off again a couple times (by the switch) it will then eventually post. Again this is all stock as I was trying to determine for definite so I can rule out anything untoward before clocking.

As I say though, performs without a hitch once it's up and running.

Hi 8 Pack. I sorted it last night as I was snap-shotting the timing page. I laxed off the secondary timings a couple notches and it seems to be fine now. Thanks for all your help. Managed to find time to put on a fresh copy of Windows 7 and currently sitting @ 4.5Ghz (till later!)
 
Bump :) Me again,

Very quick one as I'm sure you're busy! For 24/7 (pretty much) use under water what would be your maximum voltage for the 4960x mate? Don't want to go into degradation but just a rough idea would be great.
