Hi

I need help here, my quad core system is running with this board and looking more into its spec's i am left with a pci express X4 slot which has the 8500gt 512MB sitting in it. I want to upgrade my gfx card but is it worth it at X4, i want to be able to play games of 2009 and future 2010 with decent frame rates.

The cpu is a Intel Core2 Quad Q6600 running at 2.3 gigahertz. This board is also equipped with an AGP slot so do i get a good pci express card and hope for decent performance despite it being X4 or do i look for the best AGP card i can find and stick with that.

I do not want to purchase a new Motherboard just yet, what options do i have here to be able to stick with this board for another 12 months.

Thanks

Vin

Are you using DDR2 Ram? What resolution are you gaming at, as the higher the resolution the more the x4 will limit the performance.

If so I would get a secondhand P35 board and HD4850 which can be had for less than £100. If your using DDR RAM add £25 for 2GB or £45 for 4GB of DDR2. Then you may be able to get £20 for your mobo and quite a lot for DDR ram. Just my 2ps.

I am using 2Gb of DDR2 memory at the moment, this machine has had very little use until now, before i was using an Athlon 64 3400+ with a X1650 pro 512MB
but games like Arma II were unplayable due to poor frame rates.

Is that board ok with my cpu, if so i will take a look at some prices.

Thanks

Vin

I have looked around for a second hand Intel DX38BT but i am unable to find one but like i said i have the funds for a gfx card but don't yet have the funds for a motherboard/memory upgrade so it looks like i will be keeping this board for a little longer.

I am really left with only two choices : either buy a Radeon HD 3850 and stick that in the AGP slot or look at a Radeon 4000 series and stick that in the PCI express X4 slot.

With either of these cards am i going to get playable frame rates for games such as COD 4 and 5 and the two games due soon in 2010, Sega's Alien Versus Predator and codemasters F12010.

Thanks

It's a horrible board - i had a Q6600 in in, and got the same drop in FSB because it's a quad (so ran at 2.3ghz). 2 slots for DDR2 ram, 4x PCI-E etc... horrible!

Best bet - save your cash, and get a new motherboard before anything else.

I guess that is what you get when you buy a system from a shop on ebay, you get the worst board possible and is the cheapest.

Can anyone recommend a motherboard around £50 what can take the Q6600 quad cpu and can take my current 2Gb of DDR2.

Thanks

Vin

Yeah the board is nothing short of quite terrible, it's okay for weaning an old system from AGP to PCI-E but above and beyond that I'd recommend getting a cheap second hand P35/P45 board, I got an IP35Pro for something silly like £30.00 all inc in MM a month or so ago, there's plenty of bargains out there.

Again p35/p45 boards i have found do not support my current memory of DDR2 667 running at 333Mhz so that would mean a memory upgrade as well as the motherboard.

Thanks for the link, the Asus P5QPL-AM Intel G41 looks my best bet with my current cpu and memory, hope it fits my atx case.

Does Overclockers use Royal Mail or Couriers for delivery.

Thanks

Vin

I know it's not much use at the moment mate, but if you wait a few months and get your post count up, you can access the members market. Plenty of great deals on boards (i was literally in the same situation as you and found a good board for £35)

The 775 ASRock boards downclock the HCLK (default FSB) by -10MHz, which after the Q6600 multiplier of x9, translates to -90MHz overall clock speed. Together with the rigidly controlled Vcore (as in no volt adjustments) these MBs are marketed as stable, reliable for the extreme entry level segment.

There are a number of custom BIOS's that remove the clock and other manufacturer limitations:
