Hi all

I need a 4G router for the house - budget around £50. The more devices I can connect to it the better, but in reality 10 will likely be sufficient.

Are there any specifically worth going for, or avoiding? I've used a Huawei B535-232 in the past and found it very unstable, so anything better than that would be great.

To be honest, you’ll not get much for £50. Maybe a used one from Members Market? The one I would generally suggest is the Mikrotik Chateau and that’s a lot more. The Huawei B535 is one of the better 4G Routers on the market so if you struggled with that it’s unlikely that you’ll do better unless you go for something extreme like a Mikrotik SXT LTE6 or a Mikrotik LHGG LTE6.

@WJA96 I have a LTE5 kit would upgrading to a
MikroTik RBLHGGR&R11e-LTE6 LHGG LTE6 kit
Give better speed?over what i have,i can get 4 lights on the router
and the lte6 says it has 17 dbi over my stated 10.5 dbi
cheers

Yes, because the extra G is the Gigabit Ethernet port so you’ll only be getting 100Mbps maximum on an older SXT. You could potentially get a speed improvement if you can get downloads over 100Mbps.

Second this guy, he knows his stuff.

You are also advised to sample each network and their data speeds before selecting the provider.

Ahh ok
I get 40-80mbps so unless i can pick one up cheap it sounds like no improvement
Don`t get me wrong i am happy with the speeds i am getting, phone line BB when we had a phone was only 4mbps :(

It depends. If you’re pulling in a strong signal and you’re running with carrier aggregation then there’s really nothing to improve. The extra gain on the big dish antenna might well pull in a bit more but it’s just as likely to pull in more noise and amplify it.

Actually - if you have a strong signal and carrier aggregation then switching to something like a Mikrotik Chateau LTE12 might get you a speed bump - maybe as much as double the speeds because instead of aggregating two streams it can aggregate four. From a theoretical 300Mbps to a theoretical 600Mbps. I’m using one in central Manchester and it’s faster than a Vodafone 5G router.

Can you get any info from these readings m8?
and sorry to hijack the OPs thread

Yes, you have a strong, clear signal. IF your mobile provider will let you aggregate free channels then you could see a big speed boost from an LTE12 or LTE18 device.

You’d need to ask Smarty if they support 4 or 8 channel carrier aggregation.

And no, the Chateau doesn’t necessarily need external antennae, although it is recommended for best performance. Also a long of apparently single antennae actually have two or more antennae in the casing and you can plug the leads in separately. If you went SXT then you can use suction cups on the window and run a flat network cable under the window sill.
