Recently built new pc, running core duo 2 6600 on asus P5N and vista 64bit ultimate..

had 2GB of geil 6400 800mhz running fine however my other set of 2GB geil 6400 800Mhz arrived today

They are idenicle sticks of ram, so i now have 4 1GB sticks

However with al 4 in vista wont boot?

PC will boot past the initial bios screen which says duel channel 4**** DDR OK memory etc

But once it gets to the windows loading screen with the lil green bars the screen kind of greys out and freezes... waited 10 min and still nothing... take my old sticks out to see if the new ones are faulty or the slots but it works with 2gb of my old mem and with 2gb of my new mem, in differnt sockets but not with all 4 sticks

Bizzar for me tbh

Any help please??

Everything in the bios is set to Auto... the other options are numbers like 1 to 7 and i dunno what they represent so i dont wanna go borking it lol

its all on default atm

ps when booting up the bios does say next to the memory its highlightes 2T mode

hmm yeah i thin it must be to d with the timings...

it works in any combination with 1 2 and 3 sticks.. the very second i stick that 4th stick in that 2T timings must kick in and it wont bot windows...

how can i fix this because the bos is all set to auto and theres just loads of jibberish to me such as CAS# settings?

Are you using the P5N-E SLI 650i?? If so I might be able to help, because I too have E6600, the same GeiL and the same motherboard. When you go into RAM timings, they should be split up into two sections..

There should be five choices at the top, then a load more choices under "Advanced memory settings".

Set the first four like this..

tCL-4
tRCD-4
tRP-4
tRAS-12

Then make your way over to the voltage settings, and set the memory voltage (Vdimm?) one to 2.085V then you should be set, now try and boot up.

HyBrId :)

P.S. I do not know what to set my "T" command to in the BIOS, its the 5th setting under the first four normal timings. And I ahve a chocie of 1 command per clock or two commands per clock..

So is 1T

- 1 command per clock

or

- 2 commands per clock?

Thanks mate this has been driving me insane... iv got 3GB in and another 1GB stick sitting on my desk hehe

Gonna try them settings and see if it will elt me past the windows loading screen with 4gb in

PS

Just set them timings:

but where can i change the voltage?

the only voltages I can see are under the screen wher eit shows all the fan speeds etc

It only has

Vcore = 1.23V
3.3V = 3.34V
5V = 4.88V
12V = 12.09V

Thats all thats there?

Stress this is :-(

basicly all the memory is fine and all the memory slots are fine.

I can have 3 sticks in any combination of slots and it works fine, windows registers as 3gb etc

The second i stick a 4th stick in it refuses to load up windows.

The loading screen fades out and freezes.

Motherboard BIOS is updated to 0401

Asus P5N-E SLI
4 x 1GB Geil 6400 800Mhz
Vista Ultimate 64bit
Intel Core Duo 2 6600 @ stock

The bios has been reset to defaults and it doesnt work, also tried altering the timings to 4-4-4-12 still with no luck.

So would this mean that the mobo is b0rked and send it back to OC as it cant support 4GB and order a worthwhile mobo or are there any other things that I could try? Switching sticks around makes no differnce, its fine with any combination until that 4th stick goes in.

This is solved.

Anybody else who is going to attempt to run 4GB of a P5N-E SLI board might wanna know how to do it if your using 800Mhz.

Set the timings to 4-4-4-12 and Command 2 in the Chipset > Memory TImings option.

Then goto Advanced jumper settings and set the FSB and Memory options from 800Mhz to 667Mhz.

Sorted :-D

Also note:

2gb geil 6400 @ 800Mhz 4-4-4-12 on vista ultimate 64bit was getting a index rating of 4.7

with 4GB of geil 6400 running at 667Mhz 4-4-4-12 gets a rating of 5.9

Massive differnce there so the drop in Mhz doesnt matter much \o/

Memory bandwidth is not neccessarily everything.
If I've got 1 car travelling down an empty 2 lane motorway - is it going to benefit from suddenly having 4 lanes?

At least you solved it, however I was sure that core 2 boards could run 4gb ram at the proper ram speeds and not slower ? :confused: if its 800 ram it should run at that ? You tried clocking down your CPU slightly and 800 4gb again ?

blame nvidia its the same limitations as the nvidia 4 chipset
it will drop to the lower speed when 4 dimms are populated :o

only core 2 duo boards that will run 4gb at ddr 800 is intel 975 965
iam not to sure if the ati r600 will be the same.
