4GB kits and performance

I'm buying a new rig within the new two weeks, thinking of going 8GB, so naturally have been looking at lots of 4GB kits. How much performance difference would I see between say, these 4GB ram kits:

OCZ 4GB (2 x 2GB) PC2-6400C5 Dual Channel Vista Gold Series DDR2 (OCZ2G8004GK) £187.99 inc VAT

and

OCZ 4GB (2 x 2GB) PC2-5400C5 Dual Channel Vista Upgrade Gold Series DDR2 (OCZ2VU6674GK) £105.74 inc VAT

Any ideas?

Not right away, it'll be my first ever custom build and i'll be spending a lot of cash, but I will be buying an after market cooler should I decide I wanna juice it up some more. I am on a budget however, that's why i'm asking about the performance of these kits, if there's little to no performance difference i'll just go with the cheap ones!

The cheaper kit will restrict your CPU overclock if you decide to clock it. How much depends on which CPU you decide to buy.

I'll be buying the q6600, so if I do decide to go with the cheaper 667mhz kit, do you have any idea what clocks i'll be restricted to, I won't really be bothered if I can hit around 3ghz either either way. Other than the overcloks will there be any noticeable difference in the performance? It'll mainly be used with software like 3DSmax, Zbrush, Photoshop etc.

The Q6600 has a x9 multiplier, so the PC5300 will be fine for 3ghz.

There'll be a small performance difference between the two, but not enough that you'd notice. And certain not an £80 difference.

Gonna hijack this thread slightly as I have a question regarding 4gb kits myself. If I was to buy one of the new 1333FSB C2D chips released later this month, would a DDR667 kit reduce performance noticeably compared to a DDR800 kit?

Reason I ask is I wouldn't be overclocking at all, and ideally I want to keep costs down... it would be a bit of a waste paying an extra £80 or so for a DDR800 kit if there would be practically no difference to DDR667 at the default FSB. Thoughts? (Oh, and DDR667 would run at a 1:1 ratio with a 1333FSB, wouldn't it?).

Ok, thanks for clearing that up! Also, do you know if all P35 ddr2/ddr3 motherboards take 8GB? Is there often brand incompatability?

I'm pretty sure all the DDR2 P35 boards take 8gb. Not sure about the DDR3 only boards, but I don't see why not.

And there seems to be very little, if indeed any, brand incompatibility.

Hi Cob

Can I ask mate would I be better getting another 2gb of the Ballistix 5300 or should I opt for a 4gb set of the OCZ?

Didn't realise the OCZ was so cheap at the time?

Depends if you need your memory to be running above ~700mhz. 4x1gb of the PC5300 Ballistix will see over 1000mhz, whilst the 2x2gb PC5300 kits probably won't clock much more, if any, above 700mhz.

Hmm good one?

Erm well my cpu is @ 3.4 on and the memory is at 2.30 (whatever divider that is?) at just over 1000mhz, so I don't think the OCZ would be that good for me really? I may just go for another 2gb of the Ballistix in that case.

What faster than the Ballistix 5300 if I were to get another 2gb?

Thought we were talking about the OCZ 4GB (2 x 2GB) PC2-5400C5?

Thanks
