Hi There.
I have just read an article by a software analyst named Geoff Chappell about the 4GB memory limit in 32bit Vista, how it is not a physical limit but a license limit and he has tested a 32bit Vista machine with 8GB of ram.
Now i know squat about software but to me it sounds plausable,so i bring it to you for an informed opinnion.
If this has been brought up before then i appologise.
The link to the site is below.

2^32... somewhat limiting as far as addressing goes.
Perhaps superGeoff will trick the OS into addressing more memory for no reason other than to post faked screenshots.

I've not read the link, but I'm guessing you'd need a supporting CPU to do this anyway - there is a logical limit to what a bog standard 32bit CPU can do regardless of the OS.

Nope, just need a supporting kernal for your OS. Microsoft have been doing this for quite a while. Check the spec for Windows Server datacenter!

In the said article he said Windows Server in it various flavours recognise differing amounts of memory from 64GB up to 128GB for the DataCentre version, same machine, different OS version, where is the physical limit?,sounds like a software limit to me (that is my layman thought only).
If this is true then it sounds like Microsoft has not been 100% honest with both customers and the technology industry!.

Jesus, after reading the article the guy seems to have something against Microsoft.

Firstly MS haven't really been charging extra for a 64bit OS since Vista have they? Secondly why is he so keen on 32bit OS'es? Thirdly MS have given Windows Server 2003 32bit users the option to use more the 4Gb via PAE for free.

Not an MS fanboy but MS aren't a charity IMHO, they are a business organisation out there to make money. At the time that XP came out there was no need generally to worry about this 4Gb limit. TBH I'm glad to some extent that MS didn't take the easy route out to get past the 4Gb limit and simply add PAE to 32bit Vista and W7, I'd rather have a 64bit OS, I think?

The programs are still stuck with only using 3Gb of memory so perhaps Microsoft did it to save the hassle and complaints they would get from people complaining why wont this use my 68Gb of memory.
