Ive got a DS3/E6300 combo and iam after 4 x 1gb stick, ive got the geil stuff at the moment (2 x 1gb) but iam sick of trying to get programs to work, the stuff passes memtest (1 stick at a time and 2 at a time) but i have to remove a stick to get games/patches to install  (must not be compatible) i had ballistix before and that seemed ok but i would rather get something thats going to work with my setup.;)

Whats best to go for 2x2GB sticks or 4x1GB sticks?

Does the memory controller sturggle with 4 sticks and limit overclock potential?

Got an Asus P5B Deluxe.

Can anyone point me to a good 4gbv2gb debate artcile or something like that - a quick google hasn't really given me anything

Well what CPU have you got and how far have you or will you be overclocking it?

Well with 800MHZ memory, you will be able to clock your E6600 all the way up to 3.6GHz with the Memory running at stock.

9 x 400 = 3.6GHz.

So i would go for 2x 2GB Memory kit.

If you wanted to go any higher you would either have to get 4x 1GB Memory which is capable of going 800MHZ+, which im sure your ASUS P5B Deluxe board would be able to handle.

Or fork out the money for the expensive Mushkin kits (2X 2GB 800MHZ) that are capable of overclocking.

If that make's sense? :(

4 sticks limited my clocking considerably.

2 sticks my mobo would do 480FSB.

4 sticks won't go past 450FSB with slack timings, 430 with tight.

Hence I upgraded from a 6300 to a 6600 so I didn't have to bother touching the mem speed from stock.

Thanks for the info mate! Are there any specific reasons why 2x2 over 4x1stivks should be considered?

EDIT Cheers Hex, that's the one answer I was looking for lol!

If you go for 2X 2GB Kits then you have the chance to upgrade to 8GB of Memory if you ever needed to.

Also if you have a older chipset board then 2X 2GB would be wise since 4X 1GB could cause some headaches.

Hmm PC28500 memory seems hard to come by!

Couple of good pc26400 kits around whose generally better Gskill or ocz? I'm gonna need to oc these to get back to where I am at the moment in terms of cpu speed?

Geli and OCZ both supply great Memory, so which ever one you go for, either will be fine.

If you were to go for 800MHZ Memory you woulden't need to overclock the Memory at all, you would how ever, would need to run your Memory at a lower speed (around 734MHZ, on a 1:1 divider). Since to get an overclock of 3.3GHz like you have done, your FSB is around 367.

P965 DS3?

I was able to run my E6600 at 500x7 in my old DS3 with 4x1gb of Ballistix.

It's pretty hard to recommend 2x2gb of PC6400 (£160+) when 4x1gb of the OCZ PC6400 is less than £90.

probably what i'm thinking 2x2gig ram sticks over 4x1gig. is it worth the extra spend on 2 x2gig sticks?
