4gb or 8gb

Is upping the memory to 8 gb from 4 gb likely to show a significant performance increase ?

No. If you're running vista the more ram you put in the more it uses, but 4Gb max really is all it needs for day-to-day tasks.

you can get programs that load programs into ram at boot or host your page file withing the ram. i want 8gb to play around with on my next system things like that.

I will Mainly Be using my system for gaming nothing else I use it for will be requiring large amounts of ram, I was Really wanting to know if 8 gig would show a performance improvment IN GAMES over having 4gig

No.

Minimal increase at best. 4gb is the happy place to be for Vista, just like 2gb was for XP. Unless you're doing heavy duty work such as video editing and so on - you're unlikely to even get close to the limit.
