Hi, I'm about to start a new build and would like to stick 4GB of RAM in for future proofing and Vista performance.

I also plan on getting a Q6600 with a watercooling setup.

What I would like to know is: If I get a G0 Q6600 and want to overclock it to 3.6GHz+, what RAM would do the job? I would prefer 2x2GB for obvious reasons, but is the only real way forward with 4x1GB Ballistix?

It would not be an "extreme" overclock and would hopefully sit at 3.6GHz 24/7.

Thanks

Any of the 2x2gb PC6400 kits will get a Q6600 to atleast 3.7ghz. Probably a bit more.

yeh but the man, like me, wants to add in some space for another 4gb if he ever need it. saying 4x1 is cheaper is fine if thats what he wants.

as for the overclock, if you are running a 1:1 then 9x400mhz will give you 3.6 without even overclocking the ram. even if all you can get is another 25hz out of the memory thats still a 3.825ghz chip. as a not "extreme" overclock i think just about any of the 6400 2x2gb kits should do just fine. i am planning on doing exactly the same when i can find somewhere that has the g0 and the geil black dragon 2x2gb kit that i want. im only going for that one since i can find no reviews of it being good or bad so i'll give it a whirl.

OcUK received their G0's today. They'll be available from tomorrow.

Dont bother with 2x2GB By the time you ever need 8gb (which will be a very long time) DDR3 will be mainstream and there will be no need for DDR2 8gb.

Also 4x1 will overclock better.

Get curcial balistic pc2- 5300 4x1gb (two sets of 2x1) for 130 quid. it will ovreclock to up to 1000+mhz

and what am i doing with my ram?? am i playing game after game of solitaire or am i toying with fluid dynamics with a million different particles each with individual vectors? or animations with 750,000 polys, real reflections and refractions and bad coffee??

the time i will NEED 8gb is totaly dependant on what i am doing with my pooter.

Lmao. There wont be anything that need it.

Suite your self if you wana pay more for 4gb then you need to and get slower ram which will infact run far worse then the ram i suggested as you can overclock it over 1000mhz at 4-4-4-12 unles your paying an absolute fortune compared to 130 quid.

If you ever did need 8GB DDR2 ram it would cost penuts by the time you ddid.

as i said previously, calculate the motion and fluidity of over a million particles each with individual vectors. generate meshes with an excess of 750k polys every frame, render out images with photorealistic lighting thanks to maxwell render. to name but a few.

do i need t right this second? no, thats why im getting 4gb. but its something i am working towards so may be an option that i want to go for in 6 months time or even a bit further down the line. Regardless. 6 months ago we didnt need quad cores and more than 2gb of ram. no body is sure of where the market will be in a further 6 months. my choice is to get 4x1gb now, and then in 6 months buy all new again in either 2x2gb or whatever. OR buy 2x2gb now and in the future when the need or desire hits me i cn then get another 2x2gb set. if ddr3 is going to be cheap as chips then ddr2 will be as well. ddr is still floating around even now so im not restricting myself. the DS3R is capable of running ddr2 and ddr3 ram which will probably be one of my next purchases as and when the need arises.

with more people now running 64bit systems, more people cna run effectivly unlimited memory. so developers will start making even more programmes that hog it all.

my opinion is that my route is the correct one. maybe im wrong, but just maybe im right? in 6 months amybe we'll see. but to be honest sweetheart i couldnt give a ****.

seeing as you can get a 4gb kit for about 160 if you look hard enough which will give you an OC to about 3.8GHz, its easily worth it over some £120 2gb kit that clocks to hell.

Anyway all depends on what you need, and I think i need 4gb.

I talked to a guy recently using 16gb of RAM on a workstation doing some very heavy Photoshop work. You can independently configure the Photoshop scratch file as it is seperate from the Windows page file. He builds an 8gb RAM drive for the Photoshop file and let's XP64 manage the other 8gb. His system saves him LOTS of rendering time and his time = money.

There are more people in the world that "need" 4gb+ of RAM than we all might think. Besides, it's silly to make a blanket statement about how much RAM someone else"needs" when you really have no idea. Their needs and motivations for buying RAM are probably not the same as yours.
