4gb ram + o/s

Right so looking at new machine thing thinking of getting 4gb. now I know its old but me and the misses like XP as we are use to it so what edition 32 bit or 64 bit do I need with 4gb?

Also will all the normal (current xp home)programs run on 64XP if I need that?
 
XP64bit is great, its actually Windows 2003 Server edition, with a remodeled XP UI. Only downside is a few devices are hard to find drivers for. That said, I've managed to get drivers for all my hardware for XP64. Its a worthwhile alternative to XP for anyone wanting 4GB or more memory, without jumping directly to Vista.
 
I have xp64 and its pretty good (i havnt encountered any life ending hardware problems)

That said, some games can be a little selective on how they work (grim fandango and far cry annoyingly)

Personally id jump to vista 64 (im doing it soon) as thats just how its all going and xp looks lame now

Erm did you apply the x64 Far Cry patch? Because Far Cry looks awesome in X64 XP.

Personally I love x64 XP. But I wouldn't buy it again now that x64 Vista is around.
 
I cant get the x64 patch to work :( (and the 1.4 patch doesnt seem to work on x64 either..) I'll sort it out come the re-build in a few weeks

I do agree theres no point in paying for it now vista is looking good
 
I just bought a new gaming system from overclockers and had XP home edition installed,mainly because of the issues Vista has with running a lot of the software around at the moment.
For me,XP is stable and does what I need.
 
I'm loving Vista Ultimate 64, and as mentioned many of the bugs have been ironed out. I have yet to experience any major problems whilst using in about a year :)
 
XP64 is absolute rock solid, providing you don't have exotic / old peripherals. We use it at work & it never skips a beat. That said, my XP home (which I keep on a tight leash) is also almost problem free.
 
People do say that they have support problems with it, and there aren't many updates.

With any 64bit OS (it's the only kind of OS to buy nowadays really) you may have problems with drivers for old cameras scanners, printers etc.
 
Just remember, if you're installing Vista on a system with 4GB of RAM, you need to install and update it with 2GB of RAM installed, then stick the other 2GB in afterwards (assuming you have 2x2GB modules ;))

Maybe. It was a solution to a problem that didn't really exist, and was aimed at a very niche market.

But it will get every update and service pack that Server 2003 will ever get (providing it's applicable). So it's not going to be forgotten about.

there are still programs out there (which i use) that don't support 64 vista so for me there would be no point upgrading. it ll depends what you use your pc for
 
i use rane - serato scratch live, it wont work on vista 64 as its not supported. if you re going to use vista 64 you need to check all your software and hardware to make sure it is compatible

It does not have an issue running 'a lot' of the programs around. In fact, Ive yet to find a program that doesnt run on it now. Though I do appreciate there are some with dont like 64-bit.

And this is a bug, but you dont HAVE to. Ive always quite happily installed the lot with my 4gb installed (Both as 4x1gb and 2x2gb). Yes, a few have had problems, but its not a requirement.
