Hello,

I am going to be getting the Q6600 1066mhz.
If I clock it to 3.2ghz I believe I will need DDR2 800MHZ ram to run along side it.

I was looking at the OCZ and figure these are my choices:
£152 - OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-6400C4 800MHz ReaperX HPC Enhanced Bandwidth Edition Dual Channel DDR2 (OCZ2RPX800EB4GK)

£140 - OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-6400C4 800MHz Reaper HPC Enhanced Bandwidth Edition Dual Channel DDR2 (OCZ2RPR800C44GK)

£129 - OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-6400C5 800MHz SLI-Ready Edition Low Latency Dual Channel DDR2 (OCZ2N800SR4GK)

Which one would you recommend I get. Apparently with the Intel Q-core processors you dont gain a lot by having low latency ram. Is this true? What do you think I should do.

I want to get 2x2GB modules as well by the way. Not got my heart set on OCZ so open to other brands.

Thanks
Nick

You want low latencies but since Intels aren't all that sensitive to latency RAM higher than PC2-6400 is for overclocking low multi CPUs to the extreme

FSB and Ram speed runs best in 1:1 ratio. Most Core 2 Duo/ Quads currently have around 266mhz FSB (266x4). 6400 memory in DDR2 is 800mhz (400x2), but thats 'double rate' so it is actually 400mhz.

This means, 6400 memory will allow an overclock of the CPU to around 3.6ghz (400mhz FSB x 9 multiplier) without even overclocking the RAM speed, which is what most Quads/C2D peak at anyway. The higher speed ram is useful for when you want to hit a higher overclock AND want tighter timings. However, the Intel chip based systems don't see too much benefit with tighter timings in real-world performance, so people tend to stick with 6400 rated ram.

get 2 sets of these only costs around £80 better than spending over £100

A very good recommendation

I would prefer 2x2GB modules as generally I believe less modules work a bit tighter.

no generally they run higher latency?

Actually, it would depend on how much or if you intend to OC and also your CPU. The 2 x 2gb modules do not Over clock as well as an individual 1gb module. But, they can typically run up to about DDR900 or so. So, if you are Over clocking at a 1:1 ratio, you should be able to go to about a 450mhz FSB which is good for most CPUs these days. If you want to Over Clock using the memory dividers, then you may get a better top RAM speed from 4 x 1gb modules.

If it's an Intel with a multiplier of 8 or higher any bog standard PC2-6400 will do the job marvelously. The Geil PC2-6400C4 on sale this week would be a nice choice for £35.24 inc VAT. 4x1 for £70.48 inc vat

Out of interest ndeller which motherboard are you using?
