is 4 x 1gb of ram worth having? I've read odd things like it can affect performance and actually make it worse not better.

I'll be using it in a 975x board more than likely.

it's really only beneficial if you have a 64-bit o/s. Having said that, I run 4GB on 32-bit XP-Pro, but I run memory-intensive g.a. simulations and can't justify the jump to 64-bit vista before sp1 - so I suppose it depends on what you're doing. hth.

i have vista ultimate 64 bit in my new system with just 2gb of PC 6400 and cant say ive noticed any performance issues yet..the plans is to buy when i need it that way it'll cost much less but i can see why you might just want it now for the spec. if you want to make sure you dont have performance issues for a while, run high end applications like cad software or something, or just want to show off buy it now. if you intend on playing games just and can have patience i think 2gb is enough. The main bottleneck in my computer just now is the e6600 not the 2gb of memory

This has been discussed before. If running 64bit Windows or *nix then it is worthwhile. If running 32bit Windows then 3GB is the maximum you can utilise. Even then you need to mod the boot.ini to allow for use of the full 3GB.

If you really want to speed up your system - get an iRAM drive with about 1Gb RAM in it and use that as your Windows swapfile drive. That way, when windows pages out to Swapfile, it pages out to RAM, rather than a hard disk and because it's spoofing that it is a HDD, any version of Windows is radically speeded up by it. There is very little point having it bigger than 1Gb because of how the swapfile works, but with 128Mb sticks now costing £5 each, you can put a 512Mb iRAM in your PC for well under £100 or a 1Gb system for about £120.

Originally these were sold as boot disks, but there were issues with them and they were very expensive, however they make much more sense as swapfile disks, plus the price has fallen quite dramatically.

4 sticks of ram will most likley result in you having to lower the command rate to 2t. and that does result in a performance loss. also if 1 stick is a crap clocker than all sticks will be limited to the highest speed of the slowest stick.
