Just noticed 4Gb (2x2GB) on OCUK for quite a reasonable price, but wondered if this was overkill and if there was any point in so much memory?

I heard Vista required 4GB for maximum performance, i told that last he was crazy and walked away from him quickly, was he right?

Vista 32 cannot use more than 2Gb of RAM, so if you're not running Vista 64-bit then don't bother. If you are running Vista 64-bit and you use programs that handle huge amounts of data (Photoshop, some language compilers, some encoding software) then it may be worthwhile.

You can get 4Gb of Patriot PC6400 for £185 delivered at the moment and if you were thinking it was OK to spend £150-180 on 2Gb of RAM, then you'd be daft not to buy 4GB at that price.

If you are looking for the cheapest performance, then get a better graphics card or a better CPU before you buy more RAM.

Am not really looking to buy tbh, although i might in the future, i just wondered if 4GB was being phased in as the norm, but from the comments above i guess 2GB is more than enough for now. :)

Looking at the prices if you were to do it, now would be time.

I don't think we've seen the bottom of the market yet. Not by a long shot. The competition is pretty intense, yes, but the factories in the far east cannot stop churning out this stuff or they'll go bust. They cannot stock-pile it for long as they need cash-flow. Finally, the Dollar is set to remain weak against Sterling for a long time as the US authorities are cutting interest rates while ours are raising them to cool down the housing market. That makes Sterling a good currency to hold and people will sell Dollars to buy Sterling and Euro.

I definitely think we will see lower prices in the high summer when people go on holiday and their disposable income is taken up with that. Plus who buys indoors stuff in the summer? Prices usually go back up for Christmas as people buy the equipment as presents.

I wouldn't buy just yet as I think there will be further drops. Plus the second-hand bargains at the moment are quite remarkable as people offload their old stuff to buy new at the reduced prices. :D

Aye another thing to is DDR3 - I reckon it will start coming onto the retail market within the next couple of months with the anticipation of the Bearlake chipset coming out not long after if everything isnt delayed.

Bearlake chipset boards are going to be made in 2 versions of which support DDR 2 & DDR 3 for those that havent read up on the subject.

I wont be upgrading to that till around this time next year when hopefully prices will be lower. :)

So this technology will be out this time next year, maybe sooner?

Never heard of it tbh.

Most graphics card alrteady run DDR3 Memory so it's not new - just really expensive - too expensive for general PC use at the moment.
