Hi All

Im quite baffeled by something and I hope someone can shed some light on this for me. I recently upgraded to 4gb RAM and am in the process of migrating to Vista x64. Im going to dual boot for now as some things I need dont work in Vista just yet. Anyhoo, I installed the new dimms, entered the bios (ASUS Commando bios v1001) and enabled memory remap. The bios shows the full 4gb ram and is happy. Boot into XP, only 2gb shows. I have added /3gb and /pae to the boot.ini but nothing. If i go into the bios and disable memory remap, the bios only sees 3gb of the ram but then in XP it shows 2.75gb. Whats going on! Id like to obviously use as much as I can in XP (3gb) when in XP but when in Vista Id like it to address the full 4gb. Im hoping there is something simple I am missing here, any help is appreciated.

I've read all the posts regarding this, expected the worst when I recently upgraded my system to C2D, installed Win XP Pro SP2 from scratch and was surprised to see that I had 3.66Gb out of the installed 4 available....

I have a 256mb graphics card which is mentioned in most of the "where the memory goes" posts....

I think maybe you missed what I was saying really. I know that some will be used for system resources, and that you wont get all 4gb and all that but what Im questioning is the fact that with memory remap enabled, and all 4gb showing in the bios, no matter if I use /3gb or /pae in boot.ini, xp only shows 2gb ram. Surely I should see 2.5-3gb? If I disable memory remap, the bios shows 3gb ram and lo and behold, i get 3gb ram in windows. What Im questioning really is how to enable memory remap so the system sees the full 4b and to make windows use more than just 2gb.

No, I'm with you...

Just thought I'd mention my own findings, as I found that I had more than I expected and it's not through anything I did.... it also goes against what most have been reporting...

Is it something to do with the specifics of the motherboards?

I'm sure some other ASUS Commando owner will comment at some point..

Have you checked out the ASUS forums?

Anyway, hope somebody helps you out!

Thanks mate. I have been reading a bit around the net and on the asus forums it appears that the memory remap feature seems to remap all memory above 2gb or something, so basically with it enabled only a 64bit OS will be able to see it all. Im just going to have to live with it. I wont be on XP for long anyway, just waiting for some software I use to catch up and I will migrate completely to Vista x64.
