Depends on what you use your system for.

I used 6gb for many years without issue, only with 16gb now due to the cost of ram.

You should be fine with 4gb.

What are your system specs.

my wife's rig clocks up 4.5gb of ram while playing warcraft

it clocks 3gb just being in windows with no game

my c2d only clocks up 2gb in windows

clocks up 4gb playing starcraft

they are so cheap tho... skip a take away pizza and i can afford 4gb of ram....

Unless you run really intensive RAM software like editing massive photos on Photoshop at the same time then you really won't notice the difference once you hit 8GB any higher (unless your doing what I said above) is a waste imo.
