4k 120hz CPU impact?

intel.jpg

if true intel's gonna make zen 3/4 look like bulldozer all over again.
Intel 7nm? Lmao. Not in the next 5 years.

In an earnings call, Intel CEO Bob Swan said the company identified a 'defect mode' in the 7nm process that resulted in 'yield degradation' when manufacturing the chips. Intel is pushing back the release of the company's 7-nanometer chips, meaning they won't arrive until late 2022, or early 2023.

What's the verdict with this now that the new CPU's have been in the wild for a few weeks? I'm upgrading from a 3700x and it'll be paired with a 3080 for 4k@120Hz

Do I go for 5800x or 5900x? Rig is used solely for gaming.

Good luck actually getting hold of one.

I believe the 5800X is generally the sweet spot for gaming - TBH at 4K you aren't going to see vastly higher performance even trying to push 120Hz over your current CPU but with Zen 3 they have paid a bit more attention to optimising minimum frame rates and gaming relevant latency which does help to give a better feel of smoothness and responsiveness even at the same on paper FPS (though again it won't be an earth shattering improvement over what you've got).

There will be zero difference in PC gaming with that upgrade. You will get higher CPU clocks though, which looks good while PC gaming.

Graphics / monitor noob here.

I have an old (7+ years) Philips 40k 4K screen. Am I right in thinking this means as im limited to 60Hz i'm best off trying to push for 4K? Obvs because I can't do 144hz

I have a Vega64. So not the 4K beast card like many but just wondering.

I've decided to go ahead with the upgrade as I'll be placing my 3700x in the lounge rig which has a 6600k system just now. I also don't intend to buy into AMDs next iteration and will wait for the one after, so looking to maximise what I can have with my x570 Tomahawk.

Is it true that the 5800x has single CCX which would be an advantage with some games? I usually go down the "more is more" route when it comes to CPU upgrades, but I'm not so sure with this gen of Ryzen?

So, in summary it looks like 5800x over 5900x for a pure gaming rig?

To be fair, the benefit of single CCX is almost negligible. Windows scheduler is less dumb about topology of cores these days.
There is a small set of benchmarks where 5800X is actually faster than dual CCX models. Most of them can be explained by a slightly higher power budget available for cores in 5800X.

But 5800X stock performance in games is within margin of error from 5900X and 5950X. (And overclocked for single core speed it beats them)
Makes higher models worse value for "pure gaming rig". And futureproofing for games in terms of cores is not a thing.

Intel 14 was way more scalable than TSMC 10 so that you know...people talk stuff just for the sake of it, also up until one month ago none of AMD chip could beat a 14nm++++ except shaving some seconds in some tasks which in real world means nothing.

Said that clearly now AMD is no match for Intel but would not take much for chipzilla to eat them alive once more with benefits of having their own silicon cake factories :D meaning no inflated MSRP, no lack of stock for months and months and months, as today AMD is sending laughable amount of CPU to the UK.
