The monitor on my computer is 27" 1080p. The text size is just nice at native resolution for my eyes.

If I'm to upgrade to 4K would you recommend I get a bigger screen?

Depends on your desk size really. Some say 27/28" 4k is minimum to get benefit where as others say 32" / 40" 4k is the best.

I have a Samsung 4k 28" and I have it set to 200% scaling (I think) in Windows 10 and it is pin sharp and better than 1080p native to give me same size (or slightly bigger) than 1080p desktop.

I use a 27" 4k with native icon / text size with no issues but from the sounds of it you might struggle given you're comfortable with the 1080p scaling.

A big monitor size would help but really zooming / scaling options might be more practical and wallet friendly.

Consider a 34 UW mate....no faffing with scaling in Windows text size is perfect and gaming sublime.

I have a 28" iiyama and wish I'd got a bigger screen. Although I'm going to wait a while now until a 34" I like gets released and then I'll sell the 28.

Does Windows 10's DPI setting work properly? If so, it'd make desktop resolution irrelevant for font/icon size issues :)

Yes, but it doesn't take into account you monitor size when deciding the setting it defaults to.

I installed my 40" Philips 4k and Windows decided I wanted everything @ 300% zoom.... Seriously? Everything was enormous.

Also hitting Ctrl + 0 in Internet explorer kept reverting to 300% zoom until I logged off and back on with the new zoom ratio.

If I've got this right then a 34" 1440 monitor is similar to a 27" 1080 monitor in height. The 1440 monitor has ~25% more pixel density than the 1080 monitor. My 40" UHD monitor has slightly more PPI than my 34" 1440 monitor so it sounds to me you may need 110-120% scaling even with a 40" UHD monitor.

There are some nice 42" inch Korean panels available :)
