I'm building a new gaming PC (CPU: 9950x3d, RAM: 48Gb DDR5 6000 MHz, MB: Crosshair x870e Hero). I'm unsure about going to 4K for gaming, I'm currently playing at 1440p (LED) on my current gaming PC. I'm planning on buying the AMD Radeon 9070XT graphics card, will that handle 4K gaming (mainly Battlefield 6) or do I need to push the budget and go for an Nvidia RTX5080?

Thanks!!!!!!!!!

'worth it' is something only you can decide. To me it is, to others they'll claim there isn't much difference (there is).

Benchmarks are great, I’ve looked at them endlessly but what is real life experience like and was 4k worth it over 1440p?

Depends on your preference. It's obviously better image quality at approx double the pixels so great for games with long draw distances.

Some people might prefer a higher fps at lower resolution.

One thing I would add, I'd personally not want to be gaming at 4k with anything less than whatever top Nvidia card is. However I also don't like compromising much when it comes to my core hobby.

I'm unsure about going to 4K for gaming,

I have been gaming at 4k since I got a 780 Ti. You will be fine with a 9070 XT. Sure on some games you may have to drop RT or go to medium settings but you can always drop the resolution to 1080p and crank the settings. Do remember that the higher pixel density of 4k monitors itself makes a qualitative difference.

With specific regards to BF6, at the start of this video - I haven't watched more - this guy gets ~100 fps at native 4k with very high settings:

Simple answer from me. The 9070XT will run games at 4k mostly with the help of upscalers, but at lower frame rates than the 5080. If you can afford it, go with the 5080.

I have a 5080 gaming PC, wanted a second PC so purchased a 9070XT. Used the 9070XT for three days, didn't get on with it so returned the 9070XT and bought another 5080. (Then sold my first 5080 and bought a 5090 )

Regarding the difference between 1440p and 4k, its around double the pixel density. Even my old eyes can see the difference on pretty much every single game. I wouldn't ever go back to 1440p.

This depends upon the game and the settings. You don't have to run at max settings.

If you're building a brand new system for 4K, you'd be crazy not to spec it to do high settings, as in a year or 2, you might not even be able to play at medium settings, depending on how stupid engines get/dev's get lazy - UE5 is a prime example, as is Alan Wake 2.
Building one that requires DLSS/FSR/FG and or low to medium setttings, out the gate, is a bad move.

I game at 4k on my 6900xt. 9070xt will be fine. I just learn to turn down settings for best bang for buck. I will be upgrading next year though. :)

9070 XT can handle 4K gaming fine, but like everything, it depends on your expectations... Is the 5080 massively faster? No, it isn't, but it CAN make a difference between playability or not in some games, at some settings.

Do you mainly/only play shooters? Is it competitive? If so, it is far more typical to go for a consistently high FPS than for a high res/level of detail, since the former gives you a better gaming experience than say... choppy 60 fps. Though, true that upscaling can address that to some extent.

Personally, I don't see the point in the debate when you can get a board half the price (or less) and a 9800X3D and that's £400 you can dump on the 5080.

Get a 7800X3D or 9800X3D, drop the 9070 XT and get a 5080 with the money left over from the 9950X3D, there's no point buying that CPU for gaming, it's wasted on that.
Even the price delta between the 78 and 98 is making the 98 hard to justify. My mate recently did a build and I talked him into the 78 because it was £105 cheaper than the 98!! The 78 is a cracking good chip and great value.

Yep, it was the 9800X3D, before the 9800X3D - so understandably, the 7800X3D was the champ before it. You cannot go wrong, unlike RAM!

I'd already bought the 9950x3d CPU. Upgrading the GPU and monitor was an afterthought for my new build; I thought my 6900XT might have a bit more life left in it!

Fair enough, that's going to be a beast of a setup :D
RTX5080 and an MSI MAG 272UP QD-OLED X24 27" monitor now ordered. Thanks everyone.

You're welcome :) That should last you years at 4K!

Ordered the Asus ROG 5080 Astral OC in the end, paired with the 4K monitor I'm getting FPS of 95 in BF 6 (settings on Ultra). That's on my old Crosshair VIII motherboard, PCIe 4.0, with Ryzen 7 5800x CPU and 32GB Ram. Can't wait to try to the 5080 on the new build but that will have to wait for Christmas - I've bought the parts and my wife will wrap them up as gift from her otherwise she struggles to buy for me.

I can't wait for 5090 gaming!
