Right guys I currently have

Xeon 1230v3
8GB RAM
Sapphire R9 290

running a acer 4k monitor.

currently playing elite dangerous, H1Z1, LOL, payday 2, war thunder games like that.

Do also play bf4.

I currently get 90fps in elite on High with AA turned off but when in station thats drops to around 30 and the card starts getting really hot 85+.

What card do you reckon will be a decent upgrade?

I know I will need a new gpu really so will be budgeting for a 1,000w PSU first.

So far i'm thinking

R9 295X2 as it seems to be the biggest performance gain.

How would 2 X 970's performe against this?

GTX Titan?

or wait until the next gen ATI are released?

Thanks.

Honestly if you are hitting 85C with the R9 290 Tri-X (which it shouldn't), I really think you should spend some time looking at your case and think about the airflow before even considering going crossfire.

Cause at the moment it sounds to me that your case is not bringing in cool air in and exhausting heat out of the case efficiently...could you post some picture of your case and where the fans are and which direction are they installed.

This is my case
Corsair Carbide 300R Mid Tower Windowed Case

Have intake fan, top exhaust, water cooler exhaust out the back.

this is why i'm thinking a 970 and possibly anopther in the future.

Temps only go into the 80's when docked in elite but then i get massive frame drops so guessing its throttling.

this is why i was thinking the GTX970 as they use a lot less power and run cooler

If you are getting 85c on the 290 then adding another will turn your case into an oven. I am using a single BGT980 for 4K and I am happy to compromise on graphics settings until a single card allows me to increase the detail.

was debating a 980, uses less power and produces less heat

right decided i'm gonna get a 980 might as well get the best single gpu i can instead of messing with sli / crossfire atm.

I have a corsair 300R case so airsoft isnt really a problem atm cpu never goes above about 45C.

As for settings yes i don't mind playing on high instead of ultra with things like bloom, motion blur and AA cranked right down.

You mean 980. Its not useless I had a 980 with 4k and it was fine if you lower the details. With 970 SLI I dont need to lower the details.

Ignore comments like that one anyway with 4k you are better to just take note of people who have the experience to answer your question correctly.

Yeh lol.

my current plan is 980 now, then in a month or 2 gonna get a new mobo and psu and get it all ready for sli 980's

I'm running elite dangerous at 4k on high with aa and bloom off and getting 70 fps in space, 40 in station and it looks bloody amazing.

Just gets very hot in station.

gtx 980 has just arrived so will do a test on elite dangerous when I get home.

hopefull quiter & cooler are the main hopes, little more fps would be nice

Lucky Lucky. (Mouthing ? :) )

bloody auto correct on phone.

Nothing.

First quick test

Elite Dangerous

R9 290 medium settings, bloom off, AA off, FPS docked in hanger 30 gpu temp 85C Fan speed 75%.

Gigabyte 980 High Settings, bloom off, aa lowest, docked in hanger 45fps 70C max Fan speed 50% (And a lot quieter)

Tried Ultra out with boom & 11 down still

30/35 fps docked

80 / 90 fps in space temps around 65C.

High was 120 in space 60C.

Going to run on high as i really couldn't see much difference.
