Hey guys, for 4k gaming what do you need?

For example, say I wanted to play witcher 2 4k? and say I wanted to play Witcher 3 4K? The reason I ask is as most likely I'll be playing games from 3-5 years ago at 4k as opposed to the latest new game. I'm not sure how much horsepower a 1080ti for example provides with Mass effect 2 and 4k. I'd hate for it to be sitting at 100fps or something when I'm using a TV and just wasting money.

FYI I have a 4k TV,
8GB RAM
4670k which struggles to OC.

I'm trying to decide between the following if I go down the 4k route:
1. GTX 1080ti
2. GTX 1080ti + new processor
3. GTX 1060/1070/1080 + wait till 11 series

I'd say over the next year, I have around 1k I'll be happy to invest in my PC so I'm trying to utilise it sensibly.

For older games you don't need a 1080ti. Some you will to max settings but things like aa are next to useless at 4k. The Witcher series are difficult to run and have a lot of pointlessly demanding settings tw3 and a 1080ti will still struggle.

Aa is not useless at 4k.

Yes it is on a 4k 27-30" monitor.

On a 38-43" 4k monitor AA is required just like on a 1080o

Only if you sit pc distance from the screen? It won't be noticeable from 6 feet or so I don't need aa when I use a 1080p 42 inch screen from 8 feet

Who sits 6ft away from a PC monitor?

Mines max 2ft away on my desk.

43" Philips 4k

Why have a large monitor if your going to sit so far away that it may aswell be a 27"?

Eh horses for courses but at 2-3ft I struggle to keep the 27 inch fully in my view over 32 inches and I get shot from my peripheral vision.

I must have a wide vision because at around 3 ft from my 27inch screen when looking directly at it i can see either sides of the screen and even my second monitor on the right. I think for my eyes a 32Inch screen would be perfect sat about 3ft away at my desk. But at that size would need to be 4k Minimum.

I think this was a me problem since I mostly use my computer for gaming and not super high level but exclusively ranked online leauges I never have things in my peripheral vision because it means I loose but for someone playing open world mmorpg it's probably more immersive to have a massive screen

I’m running a 4790(non k) with two 1070’s in SLI and an LG 43UJ701V 4K tv as a monitor (to replace my previous Surround setup) and haven’t felt the need for AA in anything, my TV is sat on my desk about 3ft away and it looks awesome.

Performance is very good, not noticing any micro stutter.

From what I’ve read, SLI 1070’s are on par with if not better than a 1080ti but the single card has the advantage of everything working without needing SLI support, thankfully few of my games don’t support SLI so I’m not having any problems there, the only exception is FSX but that’s far more CPU bound anyway and a single 1070 is way more than it needs.

Copied from my new thread, but also relevant to this one , "I'm about to build new with a 40" 4kTv serving as monitor duties, on the productive side it will be run as 4 separate monitors, with obviously gaming at full screen, so I'm also interested in both the ideal and the minimum spec for producing acceptable results for both CPU and GPU please?? I'll ideally be water cooling hardline too so also interested in potential sli options as opposed to a single higher spec card, at the moment the cost is fluid depending on the futureproofing/potential ceiling of lower priced options.

better off getting the highest specced card you can afford rather than sli. nvidia looks to be dropping sli in all but name
Agreed, a single card is the best option, however, to say Nvidia is dropping SLI support doesn't match my experience, I'm finding it works far better than my previous SLI setups and support in newly released games seems strong.

It's still imo a good solution if you want a big performance boost.

i guess it depends on which games. AAA titles, then yeah, definitely, other than that, devs probably don't have the time/resources to implement/optimise SLI

I had an R9 Fury Nano which played very well at 4K on medium settings. To be honest from the distance I was playing (was on a 4k tv) I couldn’t tell the difference between medium and ultra unless I stopped and look real close.

I am sat around 14" from my 40" 4k screen and when looking directly at the screen I can see either side with my peripheral vision (I thought this was completely normal...?)

Have you tried 4K gaming ? I went down this route and hated it ! 4K Gaming to me just looked massively to SHARP for my liking - I returned my monitor and went back to 1440P RES - 4k gaming just doesn't feel or look right for me , not up close anyway

What screen are you using this? When you say 4 separate monitors, do you mean displaying 4 inputs at once?

I would say for now go for a cheaper card. It could be still another 3-4 years until good 4k capable cards are available. Also as others have said it is possible with current games if you tweak the settings.
