Hi all,

Anyone else having trouble playing back HEVC.x265 HDR files? The file plays but no longer triggers HDR.

Im using MPC-BE with MadVR and LAV filters. All latest.

I have re-installed all three, no change. I have tried to toggle the windows HDR toggle, if I do this the video will freeze completely. I tried PotPlayer same there so I assume its a MadVR/Windows issue.

Previously I would launch an MKV and MPC-BE with MadVRs help would trigger HDR on the TV (without touching windows switch) and also switch to 24hz. It still switches to 24hz but I get no HDR being triggered and it just crashes if I do trigger windows switch.

Anyone else struggling? I have 4:2:2 10bit selected in Nvida settings.

Games work fine eg. new Tomb Raider (need to manually toggle HDR in windows), BF V (auto switches for you).

Thanks,
Sean

Might have something to do with the source too, but I usually find that I need to select HDR manually on my TV (XF90) in order to get HDR in windows (for the video), this for playing straight through with VLC. I just tested it now, set 4:2:0 10bit in AMD settings, then selected HLG or HDR10 in my video options on the TV and a x265 HDR of Mission Impossible played fine.

Though the simplest and surest way is to just put it on a USB stick and plug it in the TV.

It's a lot of hassle all around but HDR is just a mess atm in terms of ease of use.

Yeah USB works but I dont have a stick/usb hdd big enough haha.

VLC is just a stutter fest for me. I can not manually select HDR on my TV it auto triggers only Samsung KS8000. Its an early HDR TV so no HLG or HDR+ for me.

Shocking really isnt it, its at least 2 years old now it should not be like this everything should be automatic.

I have been using JRiver with madVR for perfect 4k HDR playback, until recently. I think a Windows update broke it, now it is not working for me. I either get no HDR or the screen keeps going black.

I have given up a bought a Vero 4k+. I haven't actually tried it with 4k HDR yet as I have a server problem. MadVR has way too many settings, maybe it can be tweaked to work.

Literally just scratching my head over this about 30mins ago when I sat down to watch a film. Something has broken over the last week or so as I too cannot play back HEVC in MPC-BE and MadVR and it was working fine and I've made no changes that I recall. I'll check my Nvidia driver install date and any windows updates recently soon as the Mrs finishes watching her rubbish.

Yeah glad to see its not just me then. I cant see it being quick fix mind, im saying its a windows fault more than MPC-BE/MadVR not sure though. I even paid 0.79p for the windows HEVC as it said I needed it to play from built in windows player - It still does not work says I need the Codec even though I have it lol.

Only way around it for me is to use Xbox One Plex app, problem is it occasionally buffers (only like 3 times in a film but its annoying) even though im using a Gigabit switch. My TV only has 100mbps ehternet so direct to TV is a no no.

The MadVR thread over at Doom9 suggest it's usually Nvidia drivers to blame.

Ok cheers, so frustrating. I will update this thread if I find a solution, hopefully you could too. I know very little about all this really just followed a guide in the first place.

Hopefully MadVR is updated or the next nVidea drivers sort it, both seem unlikely though :(

Is PowerDVD worth the price? Im sure I tried the demo before but it does not do HDR in the demo so defeats the whole purpose lol

Ahh will give MPC-HC a go now.

Just installed MPC-HC its the same, will switch refresh to 24fps but does not send HDR to display and when the windows switch is toggled and I try to full screen it crashes the program :(

Are you leaving the windows toggle off and having nvidea driver bit set to 4;2;2 10bit?

Trying the PowerDVD demo again now.. Yeah same, try to play a 4k HDR and is says your version does not support it please buy it. I mean why offer a demo if you cant play a HDR file?? Why else would anyone pay 50 quid to play normal videos lol

Thanks both

I couldn't get PowrDVD to trigger HDR. Hopefully you have more success.

As for my MPC-HC settings I can share those with you a bit later on. Windows desktop is set to 1080p 12bit and when I play a UHD film it will change resolution, refresh rates, set 10bit 4:2:2 and invoke HDR automatically on making MPC-HC full screen. It reverts all of that on exit.

This is on a fully patched 1809 install with latest Nvidia drivers.

PowerDVD demo doesnt allow HEVC playback so utterly pointless. Yeah that would be great if you could.

I have my desktop set to 4k 60hz 4:2:2 then normally MPC-HC will send HDR signal to the TV and change to 24hz all with the windows toggle off. If you could screen shot your nvidea settings that would be good as well.

Is your desktop 4:4:4 and MPC-HC is also switching that to 4:2:2? If so I did not know you could do that haha.

got a cheap version off eBay a while back for PowerDVD 18. Just had a look at seen a fella selling for £5.40

But also interested in this auto-switching malarkey with MPC-HC

Cheers will have a butchers. Yeah in MPC-HC you can specify what resolution and what refresh rates your TV/Display supports and have it auto switch to them eg. 24hz for film. It will then switch back to 60hz either when you go out of fullscreen or close the program depends what you choose. Does PowerDVD not do this?

TBH when viewing on the OLED always in 4K@60Hz so it must switch back and forth when playing an mkv, never really gave it a second thought.

the DVDFab people also have an HDR player, free trial too

Just tried that, it plays the files fine (also does not crash in fullscreen) but does not trigger HDR even though enable HDR is checked in the settings. Not sure if the windows switch is supposed to manually toggled? It also does not switch the display to 24hz, shocking really if all the free players do this why cant the 150usd do it lol.

I have purchased a copy of PowerDVD in the hope of solving it, although I hate the look and interface. MPC-BE really is the best option and its free haha.
