4K HEVC playback, which player?

any particular filters or codec packs to go with it?
You might want to play around with madVR, especially as you'll presumably be watching a fair bit of upscaled 1080p and lower content. There's a nice guide here: http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=259188 - it's aimed at users of Kodi DSPlayer, but it applies equally to standalone madVR-capable players such as MPC-HC/MPC-BE.

You'll need a monster graphics card though to make use of the highest quality settings.

similarly mpc-hc seems ok,
I use D3D presentation full screen output for screen playing media which is I believe a simpler less resourceful strategy.
If gpu does not have hybrid hevc, mine doesn't, then may have to investigate other codec packs, but seems you have a pascal (see here)
if you use optimus need to check decode is on the external gpu not the intel hd.
(nvidia inspector tool)

for the future 4k uhd blu s/w players will need intel Kaby Lake architecture.

MPC-BE

Looks nicer than HC (just the skin)

+1, although it has LAV filters built in, I still install the external ones anyway just for a little more options.

+1 to madVR if your PC can handle it.

... Now if only I have a GPU with HEVC deocoding, my i7 does the job but the usage is nuts :p.

Did catch another thread on this , potplayer and the Microsoft Video Decoders(DS/MFT) sound like interesting alternative - but I do not understand what player software you need to access the Microsoft stuff ? (and would I have to use win10; edge has h265 no ?)

similar to Orcvader - I do not want to toast chestnuts on the cpu.
