The more time moves on the worse it gets buying a monitor for games. We are already at the point where TVs are better value, if you mostly use a console then I cant really suggest getting a monitor. People are now likely to flip it where they get a good TV and use that to connect to their PC. In certain tasks the larger screens dont suit a PC.

I use the PC more for productive work and viewing content (which can be good quality youtube type vlogs or amazon video/netflix) so I got a 4k monitor as it doubles up nicely for this. I still game when I can but its rarer these days.

IMO small 4K monitors are a PITA - I have three of them in total, just two on the one rig. Also a 1440p on the same setup. The 4K monitors (a Dell and an LG) are 27" and are just too small to work with comfortably at that resolution. My eyesight might not be the best but I find it a strain without making the fonts bigger on everything (where I can - not possible on some apps). This is not for games but for image and video processing mostly. I've got a 55" 4k TV where the extra resolution makes more sense but that's just for movies :) If you're going to be driving stuff (games) at 4k resolutions the rest of your kit needs to be up to the job too.

As above I feel that a smaller 4k monitor is too high a resolution to use as a primary display. I have a 40" 4k TV connected as a second display for joypad style games.

Been using 4k 28 inch for a few years now for gaming, couldnt go back to lower resolutions. I got one at work also and all my colleagues wanted one as it's much better viewing for work. You can change the icons size etc in windows - yes there maybe apps that don't scale well but that is the app not the monitor. Size, just changes how far you sit from the screen at the end of the day.

4k monitors are now coming out with 144hz refresh rates but unless you ahve high end PC hardware you'll not get anywhere near the framerates and these monitors are very expensive. Consoles don't do high fps either so a high refresh rate 4k monitor isn't going to be beneficial for you. Work wise they are a no brainer for screen real estate, unless you have poor eyesight or what app you need to predominantly use doesnt scale well then maybe not for you. Many 4k 60hz monitors now have Freesync so will take advantage of VRR.

We are now seeing TV's with higher refresh rates and VRR compatible but these are expensive as like 144hz 4k monitors they have only been available relatively recently.

XBOX gaming - I don't know if these output @ 4k? If so a TV would probabaly be better and less expensive. PC gaming I wouldn't have anything else other than 4k.

Don't forget with gaming benchmarks EVERYTHING is turned up to max to make the comparison easy to replicate, but will give low fps scores. All those game settings are there to get a decent quality image with frame rates that are acceptable to you from your hardware.

Looking for a new 4k 144hz monitor myself now but trying to get my wallet to agree to the still relatively high prices.

Recently there have been some 32 inch and 43 inch 4k monitors but these are new and so are the prices. In fact all the high hz 4k monitors are overpriced for what they are - they are priced for enthusiasts.

One website someone else posted recently I found handy to see what was coming up, is this one; https://www.displayninja.com/new-monitors/

Yes, now I have been using my 4k monitor side by side with my older Benq 1080p its really noticeable. Making the icons and text larger should be done instead of people complaining about smaller scale straining eyes with monitors.

For watching programs/movies its really ace and the work based tasks are better with more area to play with. Price wise, the hype for the new garlic bread of 144hz on big displays is going to be big bucks for the time being. I dont play competitively these days so the regular refresh speeds with freesync is ample for me. Certainly not worth paying double for just for that feature.

Hmmmm you are putting me off slightly as I have been looking for a couple of months at high hz 4k but as you say the base versions with no HDR still start @£900 for the Acer one (XV273K) and for what they are, are still silly money. Only reason I want one is that the jump from 60hz to 120+ is meant to be a real upgrade visually and 'feeling' wise. Holding on a bit longer to see if some of these new 2020 monitors lower the price of the lower spec monitors. I don't need HDR, colour accuracy or blackest blacks, not for the extra £500+ it seems to cost on some monitors.

I'll get summat in 2020

Likewise I will treat myself to that calibre of monitor/screen when the time is right (typically price dictated - under £300 for me). My current monitor was a xmas gift unexpected from the wife, yet she sourced it for £180 which was cheaper than the usual online retailers. It hasnt got HDR like you say as its fairly new requirement and jacks the price up, and its not advertised as above 60hz but thats not needed right now. The nicest feature was it came with Freesync so when I get to game more and play with the new Adrenalin driver changes I can report back a direct experience. I can also drop the res for really demanding games to 1440p, yet still view movies etc at 4k.

My next purchase would probably go the other way where it would be a TV used on a PC with the modern features like HDR, DP/HDMI 2.x if you know what I mean.
