Hi guys, I've recently bought new computer rig and have been debating between those 2 monitors, I will mosty use it for gaming.

my rig :
z170
i7 7700k
8gb 3000mhz
GTX 1080 Ti

Also the price difference is a big factor as I have already spent lots on the hardware stuff.

Acer Predator XB281HK 4K
VS
Acer X34A Predator Curved 32"

I just got the X34A, previously had the Xb270hu and I'm very impressed with it. Not really noticing the drop in hz that much but extra rez and ultrawide is awesome. 4k not worth it for me

It befuddles me somewhat why some people would prefer worse frame rates and less immersion just for the sake of better image quality. PC gaming is a medium of MOTION and the frame rate and immersion factors are HUGELY attributable to the enjoyment factor. Not that image quality isn't, but once you recognise that the graphical demands of 4K are so much greater than 1440p UW and the performance hit you will take, there's just no debate in my mind.

I am an X34 owner myself and could never go back to 16:9 now. Whenever I do sit in front of a regular screen I feel like something is missing. I have seen 4K and yes it looks nice, but no way would I ever trade my X34 in for one. I might consider it at 40"+ where I would not be losing any of that immersion factor (a 40" would be the same width as a 34" UW), but I'd still have to contend with a huge drop in performance. The fact is that there is just no single GPU capable of pushing AAA games to the max in 4K. Not so much of an issue if you play older games, but I doubt many gamers would say they have no interest in any future games and are happy to forever game on older titles. My X34 however, copes quite well with a mere 1070 in most situations, albeit not always maxed out but it still looks great. Crank up to a 1080Ti and you're laughing!

My advice would be to get a 1440p UW and experience it... if for whatever reason you feel it's not doing it for you, then you can try 4K, but I'm not sure how that will give you what you find lacking at 21:9, unless ALL you care about is image quality. The only drawback with 1440p UW, as you've highlighted, is the high price... but it's worth it IMO.

I'd go for UW.

I think to go 4k, I'd want to probably just do it on a big HDR enabled TV. I don't see the value in 4k monitors given you'll struggle to drive them to 60fps, and a lot of them dont go past that unless you're paying huge money.

UW seems to offer this crazy emmersive experience that nothing can beat (other than maybe a custom resolution on a 65'' TV? but even then , factor in g-sync, the fact its a monitor etc...!

The issue with UW is price but given your choice is UW or 4K both have that issue...

TLDR : IMO go Ultrawide for monitor... just a different experience.
I'm contemplating UW monitor vs 4kTV atm with a 1080ti.

Looking at YT videos, 16:9 just looks soooooo cramped. I even look at games on my 50'' TV now and I think they look cramped and could with a bit more immersion either side.

I use both 4k and 21:9 on same screen (40" ku7000 TV). For general usage and most games, 21:9 is great (3840x1620, custom res). A few other games, I prefer 16:9 4k. Surprised I get a smooth gaming experience in several games tested so far, obviously with some settings reduced on tough titles, esp reduced or no AA. This on a GTX 1070. IMO, still looks better than with higher settings on the 27" 1440p I was last on.

For me its the cost difference.
A decent UW monitor is generally £600+
A decent 4k TV used as a monitor however is only from £300 - £450.

Totally understand that, cost is undoubtedly a factor and makes 4K more attractive given it's easily obtained at a low price.

Which aren't the best at gaming.

You will undoubtedly have a better gaming experience with a dedicated fast refresh adaptive sync monitor. The problem is many people just can't afford it. Plus there is still this perception that 4K=the best. I encounter this myth all the time... it's somehow seen as the zenith of PC gaming and trounces all that's beneath it.

I would choose 4k. A lot of it depends on the game you play

There's a Philips 4k TV thread in the monitor section, I highly recommend looking through it
