*** 4K Player Thread ***

Ah.... I was doing it wrong with the xbox - didn't see the separate bluray audio settings!

Enjoyed the independence day movies over the weekend with dtsx and Atmos respectively :)

As the video posted by deuse above illustrates, the Panny 900 is currently a better player and this ought to apply to the 700 too, assuming the same core internals.

Im not convinced, purely as an observer rather than anything scientific, that they can be the same internals

The 700 is what £300 cheaper than the 900 when it was originally introduced (and I seem to recall Pana are going to stop production of the 900, which also kind of suggests there are significant differences) - you dont get those kinds of savings from production numbers changing or buying more componants in bulk etc

(900 is now advertised at £450, compared to the 700 @ £300ish but original retail price of 900 was closer to £600).

a ub700 review, and have read on several sites it has same processor as ub900, principally lacking the nice 2.0 dac versus its senior sibling
(have wondered, to what degree dac might be exploited for streaming to hifi from plex/chromacast, however, but no optical in)
as posted earlier ub900 can be had for £350, and 700 will drop, when its honeymoon is over, and competition is felt.

Would like to know if these can give netflix and amazon at 24fps, since significant drawback of the lg(oled)&samsung tv's is that they pull-down the 24fps to 60hz,
and if you do not want games, then it will rapidly encroach on shield & xbox ones s.

None yet, though the x800 from Sony can technically do it but it would need a software upgrade and I don't think there's any eta for that.

Is there any players that have DV yet, would like to get a 4k player but want DV on it as I have a B6 oled.

There are no DV discs yet, apart from maybe an odd one or two.

DV is trying to stage a comeback but I can't see it happening simply due to the headstart HDR10 has and the licensing fees Dolby want. There are no discs, no players and only LG sets support it. Some TV manufacturers are promising to support it soon with updates but I think they're just hedging their bets tbh. If you want to wait then that's up to you but I think the dust will settle with HDR10 for Bluray discs and HLG for broadcasts.

Thanks, I might take a chance on the x800 at some point then In the hope it gets an update.

As for DV uhd discs, 4 studios have all stated they are releasing dolby vision supported discs. Sony pictures and Universal being two of them.

Just purchased Passengers 4k to watch on my new OLED. Oh my goodness does it look amazing!

I never went to the cinema to watch it, I was just waiting for the 4k blu ray release.

It's visually stunning and the audio is superb i was very happy with the film overall, basically anything to do with space and i'll buy it.

Going off topic for just a second has anyone seen they have the Iron Man Trilogy in 4k on amazon?

Does this mean future Marvel films will be available in 4k blu ray?

£80 is crazy money. I think they are just 4k transfers, not true 4k.

is the iron man transfer going to be different to the german 4k versions already in the wild $66 apparently
and even though they are based on 2k DI's, are they not potentially 16bit cinema standard so will give good rendition with hdr.
(I use IMDB for resolution & DI data for films, but it does not seem to have bit depth data ? )

Yes its a German release.. avforums have recently reviewed them and they dont seem to rate them picture quality wise so probably so not worth buying if you already have them on std blu ray.

No news from Disney but they are being pushed apparently according to this article.

According to Asim, it's all "marketing baloney"

https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/posts/30763244

All this HDR baloney is just a marketing gimmick to help keep selling TVs. Only reason MS has decided to milk it is because they've recently been trying to milk as much money as possible.

It's all BS. An HDR image can be contained within a completely standard sRGB colour space. I've done it myself lol, and so have millions of people, many years before TV manufacturers decided to turn it into a money making gimmick.

Dynamic range has absolutely nothing to do with the colour space your working in. The dynamic range is dictated by the RAW dynamic range of the imaging sensor, it's to do with signal clipping. lol. If you have a good enough imaging sensor to be able to capture things with less clipping, then it doesn't matter what colour space you're displaying it in.

But obviously TV manufacturers won't profit if studios just release HDR material on a standard RGB model, which is perfectly capable of displaying absolute black as well as absolute white. So they need to make it seem as if it's exclusive to some brand spanking new TV technology.

This HDR business is no different to a TV manufacturer claiming a 100000000000000:1 contrast ratio.

According to the disc reviews Ive seen 1 & 2 dont look anything special but 3 looks superb - pity really as 1 is easly my favourite film

I see they have already put up for pre order Life, Ghost in the shell, Alien: Covenant and Fast and Furious 8 in 4K.

Alien is £34 though..

Watched Passengers (at last, for the 1st time) in 4k, and to me it looked really good - some of the early cinematography is absolultely stunning

I know a lot of people dont like the film itself, but I really enjoyed it

Not sure if its the player or disc, but during the opening credits I got a minute or so of flickering in one small section of the screen but it cleared up and didnt happen again .

edit - not entirely sure if CGI / digitial effects can be called cinematography or not but some of the outside shots looked spectacular to me

(maybe not intentional) but postponing first time viewing for 4K disc at home, is interesting strategy.
[was a bit reverential to Sunshine/Shining ;)]

zoom have convenant/prometheus at £25
still no 4k rental companies, just cinemaparadiso that have a few.
