Hi guys, I have been speaking to a friend and he informed me that when 4k is at 120/144 hertz I will have to upgrade my 980ti as it won't be compatible. Is this true? what connection will 4k use at that hertz? I thought it would be the same as it is now.

might be stating the obvious but a single 980ti won't be playing any current or future titles at the framerates that will take advantage of those refresh rates in 4k....

Yeah I know that, I just wanted to know if it will be compatable, I will get another 980ti or 2 if they are.

No, your question is still open.
Reason is either HDMI 2.0 and Display Port 1.2 is not capable for 4k@120 Hz display. There is workaround like monitors with dual DisplayPorts - if that's what you want and your 980Ti does have two such ports, it probably will be fine with 4k and 120/144Hz. But even SLIing two 980Ti's is not enough for smooth 120 FPS playing in 4K (in majority of games).

biuro74 said it - your 980 Ti has DisplayPort 1.2 and HDMI 2.0 ports, so the max refresh rate you can get at 4k (with either interface) is 60 Hz.

The only transport that can go higher is DisplayPort 1.3 (3,840x2,160@120 Hz).
