Would there be any difference with a 4k monitor over say a 24" 1080p with 4k down scaled onto it, or would the performance in games be identical?

sorry if I misunderstood the question but are you asking if a 24inch 4k monitor set at 1080p would play any different to a 24 inch 1080p monitor? if so then the answer is it shouldnt have any effect!

you might find it hard to find a monitor which can accept a 4k resolution input from your graphics card, when the native resolution of the screen is lower (e.g. 1920 x 1080). Some of the Korean models now talk about "virtual 4k" support which does allow that, on to a 2560 x 1440 res screen. however, imo it's pretty pointless as the image quality is not very good, there's a lot of blurring and the image isn't sharp. I don't see the point in doing that for games or anything as you're just placing a larger demand on your graphics card anyway. If you were outputting 4k to a 4k res screen then the image quality is sharp and crisp as it should be

You'll get better performance running actual 4K according to my testing. Likely because the gpu has to do more work with rendering the image at 4k and then downsampling it to your current monitor. Actual 4K looks better too than the downsampled version, though this is not really surprising. :)

Downsampling on a 1080p monitor will make a huge diferene but it will never be close to true 4k unfortunately.

Thanks guys for clearing that up for me, so it's worth downsampling for now and then still worth getting a true 4k screen down the line.
