Hello

I'm moving home in 3 weeks and i'm going to by a 4k OLED TV.

The plan is to have my Gaming PC on 24/7 which will serve up 4k content on demand to my firestick 4k via plex for android. Does anyone else do this or have any better solutions than leaving my pc on 24/7 ? i've heard of NAS but im clueless with that stuff.... any help or advice appreciated.

Gaming pc will be too loud and too power demanding. A network attached storage is like having a usb HD that is visible on your lan. That is the most basic use but they are a low power server, with various packages. From Torrey's to vpn, cloud storage, backup, security cameras etc

I'll be buying a Synology ds418, four bay nas. To upgrade from my older Nas. For streaming or transcoding 4k you will need a good Nas. For storage only a cheaper or even older model will be fine ie for music and pictures a old dlink DNS 323 will cope ok I've got one with three the so couple of high capacity drives for 300,000 plus flac files is perfect.

Well if you copy files to the Nas than your htpc can access it.

It's no different to sharing directories on your computers. You can copy files from htpc 1 to htpc2 directories.

Not sure what you need from Nas others will help you as only use it for MP3, flac and video storage although I'll use it for torrent later on... quieter than htpc and use less power also

Never used plex have no need for transcoding, my nas is too slow anyway.

If your playback devices are fast enough and have decent player then I don't see need for transcoding. Not sure what plex also does.

Just use Kodi myself to access Nas drives and play directly. For audio use Logitech squeezecenter which is Synology service.
