4k video in youtube.

I picked up a 4k monitor in the b-grade offer. The plan was to use it on my second PC just to watch videos mainly youtube. I assuemed that youtube would use the GPU, but it looks like the video is being handled by the CPU. i have an old core2quad with RX550, at 1080p fine, but anything higher than this and the CPU shoots up to 100% and the FPS is un watchable. I have tried with an R9 290 but the same. So is Youtube CPU bound? and waht would be the minimum required to get 4k to play smoothly
 
Displaying videos is CPU intensive so it's your CPU you may need to upgrade, not your video card. On a really old PC you may even get trouble with the various buses on the PC just being overloaded by the amount of data you are processing.

I take it a skylake pentium g4400 would still be pants, as i have this in another PC. sort of regeretting just selling my ryzen 1500x :(
 
Agree with above. That CPU hasn’t got the guts for4K video. 4K and above video is highly intensive. I say you need a CPU upgrade. Doesn’t have to be anything amazing. A Ryzen 3600 with a B450 mobo would be ample.

You could even ditch your graphics card and go for an APU.
 
*** law i sell my ryzen system, then a 4k monitor comes up on offer and i have nothing to use it with.

So i plugged my gaming pc into the monitor RTX2060super takes over the full load of playing 4k video, and leaves CPU virtually idol. I wonder if a Quadro P400/P600 would do as they are the same architecture as GTX1050/1060, trying to avoid buying a new motherboard/cpu
 
Odd as like the OP I always assumed that 4k playback in things like YouTube could be near completely off-loaded onto the GPU to the point where it didn't matter what CPU you had?

I assumed any modern GPU would handle this but maybe it's only certain cards?

from what i can make out any 10 series Nvidia GPU will take the load from the CPU, and any modern 6 core cpu is going to fine on its own with a crappy card. I also tried a Radeon Pro WX2100 which is relatively new and it passes it straight to the CPU. Im going to take a gamble on a Pascal Quadro P400 (from mm) as its same gen as 10 series GTX. Couldnt have picked a worse time to want a GTX970/1050.
 
Weird. :confused: Could be that AMD doesn't include dedicated hardware for 4K in their chips, either this or somehow the driver team decided not to use the hardware acceleration on its products.

"YouTube uses 4 container formats and 4 different codecs. It depends on the popularity of the video what codecs are used for your video (see below why). Generally, every of your uploaded videos will be encoded in h.264 and will be muxed into an .flv and .mp4 container. That's the standard and this will happen for every video. Though .flv will only be used for resolutions below 720p. Meaning only 360p and 480p will exist in an .flv container. Though every video below 720p will also have a mp4 version available. For 240p YouTube is also using 3gp which is a rather old codec (based on MPEG-4 Part 2 (not to be confused with MPEG4 Part 10 aka h.264) meant for mobile devices (long before the smartphone era), it comes in the container .3gpp.

The other codec used is VP8 which is coming in the WebM container format. WebM is a format developed by Google and was meant as a standard video codec for HTML5, support for it is by now pretty good in most modern browsers. WebM was introduced with the HTML5 version of YouTube. YouTube only encodes some videos in WebM after they got uploaded and mostly only popular videos (going by the videos I saw encoded in WebM) so it's not certain your video will be present in WebM. Though this is changing with WebM gaining some more support.

YouTube also supports VP8/VP9 in the WebM container. This is supported by all major browsers for several years now. With WebM, they also introduced support for the Opus audio codec (besides AAC which is used in all other containers)."

SORTED!!! goto microsoft store and install VP9 extension's. 4k in youtube now playing perfectly on Quadro P400 and AMD a8 5600k (i swapped cpu/mobo). P400 is doing the decoding :)
