4k vs 8k, is there a difference other than performance?

WarnerBros says NO

WarnerBros has conducted a double blind study on customer perception of 4k and 8k panels.

And the result is exactly we expected, that consumers cannot tell the difference between 4k and 8k TV's

And yet this year Samsung is pushing 8k hard, they no longer sell high end 4k TV's, if you want proper FALD its only available on 8k

I remember articles saying that anything higher than 720p was excessive. The issue is that the average TV size since then has grown considerably. 55" is considered "small" and indeed was -until this year- the smallest OLED panel LG Display made.

Whilst there are more important factors in determining overall image quality (colour, contrast, etc); resolution bumps do provide an appreciable difference, particularly on larger displays. That said, I wouldn't trade my 4K OLEDs for an 8K QLED. I'll wait for 8K OLEDs -or similar self emissive tech- to become mainstream.

Compression artefacts are most important.i could make 4k look horrid with lowest video rate. Make it look blocky.

I would rather have good dvd transfer Superbit than badly compressed 720 or 1080

The tech to make higher res' displays far outstrips the ability of the industry to deliver content.

We haven't yet got universal 1080i as a broadcast standard, and that's after 13 years since first availability.

It's not relevant for companies. All that matters is the next marketing tagline they can use in an attempt to sell more units.
There is barely any difference between Blurays and UHDs at present when it comes to resolution, which in part has been created because the film industry is stuck at 2k intermediates due to ever increasing overheads of going beyond that.
