When will we see 4096x3072 Displays for the home/office and what will the interface be for them? Also, what kind of panel size would it have to be for it to still be big enough for us to use them, Like 36in or bigger do you think? With Gphx cards out like the GTX680, its time we got bigger displays! :)

I've yet to see a 4K screen - Is the difference incredible? Is a 4K television set basically a retina screen in a television? (I.e. so many pixels on display you can't see them?)

Depends on the size of your monitor, the distance it's sitting from you, and how good your eyes are. I can't say for sure, but I'm leaning towards being less dense than a "retina display", which is only an apple marketing term anway.

As for whether or not it's needed, I'd say 100% yes. If your display requries the use of cleartype, and you're using anti-aliasing, then I'd argue you probably don't have enough pixels, and whilst the aformentioned work arounds are good for today, they're not desirable in perpetuity, and they're not without their drawbacks.

My only question is, is 4k enough?

Well after posting here, I ran to google to find out a bit more about 4K. Apparently, an 8K technology is in the works

However, at the moment, it's a case of hardware before software because there are 4K monitors beginning to rear their head without any 4K content available :p

they are available already in 56" 3840 x 2160, but unfortunately they are a few quid short of £60,000, bit steep for most people.

All recent movies are in 4k format so the content is there they just need to figure out a way to get it to us. 3D games should be ready and simply display more.

I don't think Windows itself is quite ready for it yet though. Upping the DPI setting still messes up quite a few things it shouldn't. Some apps are fine though so it's not really Windows that isnt ready but the apps. For having things readable it is however required as you can't really have that res in a monitor size otherwise. I have a 27" 2560x*1440 screen and some people already find the text too hard to read and/or the screen too big.

Whilst it's better to go overkill than under, I'd hazard a guess that 8k will be for bigger screens, and not for your typical PC monitor.

According to the following data, using someone with 20/20 eyesight, 4k should be good enough for a 24" on a screen 2ft away. Similarly at 5ft away, 4k will be good enough for upto over 70" inches, whilst 1080p is getting long in the tooth at over 40" from 5ft.

The industry has a history of underestimating the human eye, so time will tell.

Hmm interesting stuff! Future technology is looking pretty sweet :)

I didn't realise that all recent movies were already in 4K format - I always thought a 1080p blu-ray video just meant it was 1920×1080. Whereas a 4K movie would have to be 4096 x 3072...

Wake me up when I can buy a 16:10 24" 4k 120hz OLED -_- Then maybe we can finally suprass 8 year old CRT's =p

Yes it is, I just think he means the original film has enough info for 4K, they just cut it down for blu-ray :)

DisplayPort 1.2 can do 3840 x 2160 @ 60hz.
Technically you can drive 4 x 1080p panels off one interface. Whether or not there are adapters to do that is another matter. :)

By the time these 4K panels arrive (and are commonplace) the interconnect technology will have improved significantly, probably at least doubling in bandwidth.

I was actually thinking the other day you could ask Samsung really nicely to sling you 4 "New" iPad displays then glue them together somehow for a lovely 4096x3072 display.
