My 4S is currently running IOS6, however I would like to upgrade to 7 - is this possible? I dont want to go to IOS8 as I believe the hardware is too slow for IOS8 and I dont want an otherwise very capable phone to be sluggish.

maybe through jailbreak its possible? It depends on whether or not apple still digitally sign ios7, which i image they will because I'm pretty sure the iPhone 4 can only go up to 7, so its still worth keeping around. Someone more knowledgeable than i will be along shortly though

Yeah, it's too late now, Apple have stopped signing installs for iOS7 on devices that are compatible with iOS8. I ran iOS7 on my iPhone 4 and it wasn't too bad. It was sluggish in places, but more than usable. If you watch some of the performance videos on YouTube you might be able to get a better idea.

As a side note, I have a few iPad 2 devices at work which has similar specs and they are running iOS8 without any noticeable performance issues.
