I have been avoiding this genre for far too long so I am going to give it a whirl.

I have bought Sword of the Stars complete collection, Sword of the Stars 2 but am also looking at Sins of a Solar Empire, Legends of Pegasus, Galactic Civilizations II and Endless Space.

If I am going to play one of these which one would be the best? Nice graphics would be a plus!

Cheers!

Sins of a Solar Empire - Rebellion gets my vote.

stunning visuals, runs great on avg PC's and has bags and bags of playability.

Gal Civ 2 is excellent if you like turn based strategy, and you also like playing alone.

I have sunk far too many an hour into Galactic Civ 2, such a fantastic game and well worth it if your looking for a single player 4x game, the ai is utterly brutal on it i think i managed to complete a game on normal once and theres around 4 more difficulties after that

Endless space i have been toying with buying it looks a fantastic idea and a lovely streamlined way to manage colonies but the thing i keep on hearing is the ai is pretty dumb currently and there is a 300 turn limit?, really puts me off and really want to be challenged again like in galactic civ.

Legends of Pegasus looks like a fantastic idea but i've really not seen much gameplay or heard that much info from it, which is worrying since its out soon, compared to endless space their devs seem to be very secretive in giving out information.

Swords of the stars well you've already bought but the first one is fantastic and well the second one i have no idea how thats doing they really buggered it up and very glad i didn't pre order, last i heard it is just about in a playable state.

Thats my take on things anyway.

TLDR: Galactic Civ is a safe bet for a singleplayer 4x game :D

Thanks guys, just been playing Swords of the Stars II for about 90 minutes and it was very engrossing, I had heard that it was buggy but I haven't encountered anything yet?

Will definitely grab Sins later on and play that. Is it worth jumping straight into rebellion? Or should I get one of the older ones.

Thanks again,

Thanks again,

it might be a good idea to wait a bit for the STEAM sales, pretty sure you might be able to grab the first SINS + addons on the cheap and maybe Rebellion.

Sword of the Stars complete? Something like £20 on steam but you can get it for £8 in the Amazon paradox bundle with 5 other games!

This. Sword of the Stars 1 is very good and the bundle includes Sword of the Stars 2 along with it.

It's also got Crusader Kings 2 and Victoria 2, both of which are excellent strategy games if you like that kind of thing. They are very complex though.

Also Sins of a Solar Empire isn't turn based but amazing, highly recommend that.

I have been reading about Sins and correct me if I am wrong but is it kinda like a skirmish were you choose a map and just play?

I am looking for a game that you choose a race etc and build an empire, Sword of the Stars 2 appears to be that kinda of game and am enjoying it, just wanted to see if there were any better ones with a similar game style.

Endless space is another. I find it has more empire building then Sins', but the combat is more basic.

Edit...I should've really read the whole thing.

Distant Worlds

Great game, very macro-management compared to GalCiv's micro-management. Agin, single player, highly polished with great AI.

Absolutely agree, the best 4X game around and I've played my fair few. Sure it's 2D and the graphics/UI are a bit dated in parts but you soon warm to their charms.

I loved GalCiv2 but Distant Worlds is just so much more in-depth and feels alive, in fact it feels more like a simulator of space empires but in a very good way.

But don't take my word for it:

"I finish with this. If Master of Orion 2 was the 4X space strategy gaming reference of the nineties, then Distant Worlds Legends is the 4X space strategy gaming reference of the early XXI century."
