I’ve moved in to a new property recently and I’ve noticed that when the tumble drier changes direction it cuts the amp out (audio and visual) briefly almost like a mini power surge, the amp appears to be the only thing affected and is on a surge protector.

Wonder if anyone has any advice on how to resolve it?

Amp is a Sony STR-DN840, let me know if any further information is needed.

There's a good chance that this is airborne interference rather than via the mains.

The change in direction of the tumble dryer involves some electrical motor noise (arcing) that's normally blocked by something called a suppressor. Where the suppressor is going faulty or has failed, then there's an electromagnetic energy pulse that the HDMI cables are picking up, and that's temporarily crashing the digital data stream. The result is a loss of picture and sound.

The same thing used to happen when cars and motorbikes had electrical points for the ignition rather than modern electronic ignition. It would affect analogue TV with noise on the picture as the vehicle passed.

I come across the same issue with breakup of Freeview reception. Usually that can be alleviated somewhat by using swapping out the chappy poorly-shielded coax fly lead. Ultimately though, the answer is to get the source of the interference fixed.

Just a replacement suppressor. It's like a big capacitor. Do a Google search for your make and model of dryer plus the word suppressor. Somewhere such as eSpares will list them. Not difficult or terribly expensive to replace. Then you can take your time choosing a good dryer.
