Sorry to post another spec me thread..

I'm after a 5.1 (7.1 is ok but not necessary) setup. I have a Toshiba TV with optical digital input, but am I best off just using audio over HDMI?

Max budget is a tough call, a package like this Yamaha (http://www.richersounds.com/product/home-cinema-systems/yamaha/yht-199/yama-yht199) is obviously cheap as chips and I wouldn't expect much from that, I'd say max budget is about £400. I do have some speakers (no subwoofer); would I just be better spending it all on an AV receiver and not getting a package - I'm going to assume that I won't get a good deal if I do?

There's a lot of these BluRay packages about for reasonable money, but I don't want a BR player.

Minimalist looks would be nice too..!

You won't find that YHT-199 package anywhere, I tried a few weeks ago and they are all out of stock.

I have around the same budget, but I upped it a little, with £500 to spend, I bought these Speakers below for £300 which were previously retailed at £900 when they came out, and I hope to pickup either the Yamaha RX-V675 or Denon X2000 for £200.

I'm curious as to what others will suggest here, but from me that's the best I think you can get for your budget if you add that bit more.

I don't know if they will match properly in terms of output power and driving the Speakers, but I think maybe the Yamaha RX-V375/RX-V475 might be sufficent enough for those Speakers which are retailed at £150/200.

Let us know what you went with.

Hmm the Yamaha Pioneer and Denon all look really good, how the hell do you make a choice at that kind of budget price.. WhatHifi also comparably shows the Sony STR DN1040, which looks great, and ticks all the same boxes.

Looks like in order of prices its the Pioneer, Denon, Yamaha then Sony, price range of about £100 difference. The Sony only leaves me with £50, the others give me £150 for either a speaker set or just a subwoofer. I can use my existing speakers for now (they're not great) and maybe revisit the speaker set in the future..

Grrrr, almost too much choice :(.

I believe most favour Yamaha, often said to go with which AV Receiver features appeal to you.

It comes down to your Speakers in the end, Sony and Pioneer are considered 'bright' correct me if I'm wrong, and Yamaha is warmer sounding, Denon sort of in the middle.

The Sony 1040 has it's good points and also bad points, I've see some issues with it online just Googling 'sony 1040 problems' gives you an idea.

Which speakers do you have at the moment, so we can help?

Personally, I'd go with Yamaha or Denon.

They're just some cheap biwire speakers I've had for ages, I doubt the brand (Arena) is known. Can't even remember where I got them.

I guess the long term plan should be to look to invest in some proper speakers. I wouldn't mind a decent floor standing setup but that will have to be sometime in the future.

Right going to scrap the Sony; looks great but it's more than I realistically want to spend.

I have to say the reviews of the Denon have me leaning towards that, cheapest I can find it is £250, which leaves me with £150 for a subwoofer or speakers.
