5.1 only producing stereo ?

I have onboard optical and co-axial out on my shuttle but using either an optical or coaxial digital cable it throws all channels through the left and right front channels

all the sound is output it just isnt sent to seperate speakers

I have checked all the settings and it is set to 5.1.

How do i get it to split the channels ?
