So almost 6 years ago I posted a thread very similiar to this in this same forum asking for a reccomendation of a 5.1 set of speakers for my PC. I actually ended up buying a home cinema system with a Pioneer VSX-819 amplifier and a set of Kef 1005.2 speakers with a kube sub. I've loved them for the last 6 years and they have been a great system. So much so that now I've finally moved into my own house they have been promoted to pride of place in my living room and are now fulfilling the purpose they were always intended to.

Unfortunately this now means my PC has been reduced from that lovely system to my partners Creative Gigaworks T40 II speakers. There actually a pretty good set when it comes to music but I'm missing the bass and surround I could get from my old system. Obviously I'm comparing a £80ish set of speakers to my old £500's worth so it's no surprise but it's got me wanting to get another 5.1 set.

I really don't want to go down the home cinema route this time as I'll no longer be watching films directly on the PC and they will solely be used for gaming and music. I also want to ensure they can connect up directly via analogue connections as I have a nice Asus Xonar sound card within my PC already.

I have a budget in mind of what I'm willing to spend and it's something in the £150-£200 region. Unfortunately there seems to be absoutley nothing out there that meets that kind of requirement. The only realistic options I can find are the Logitech Z506's at the £70 mark, or the Logitech Z906s at the £300 mark. In all honesty the 906's look lovely but it's more than I want to spend and I get the feeling they will be overkill. Having said that the 506's look quite nice as well but I'm concerned that although they will give me my positional audio back they may actually be a downgrade from the Gigaworks T40's I'm currently using.

At the minuite I'm somewhat wishing Logitech did a set of Z706's sitting somewhere in the middle but unfortunately this product doesn't seem to exist. I also can't find anyone seeming to offer anything similiar.

Can anyone thing of anything I may have missed that would do the job? Alternatively has anyon compared the Z506's to the Gigaworks T40's? If they offer comparable quality then I could potentially save myself a wad of cash.

For 5.1 PC speakers, there's very little choice between the price points of Z506 and Z906. Z506 will be fine for gaming and movies, but for music they will pale in comparison to the T40. The Z506 are cheaper, but have many more materials and speaker drivers. When you've got all those extra materials required for a similar amount of money, that means everything has to be cheaper so therefore cannot sound as good.

If you want 5.1 but don't want an AV receiver, then I'm not sure there is much else really other than to decide whether to go for the Z506 or Z906.

That's pretty much the conclusion I've come to and it seems such a shame :(. I'm not averse to having a seperate amp and speakers again, but I'd want to do it inside the £200 budget and I just dont think that's going to stretch to being enough.

It does seem like logitech / creative have both missed an opportunity not having the £150-£200 price point covered.

Yep, 5.1 is a requirement as the positional audio is the main think I'm missing since swapping to the stereo speakers.

I would still need a seperate amp to power them though? Ideally I'm after an intergrated setup this time otherwise I'm back to going for a seperate av receiver and speaker set again.

Grab a Logitech Z5500 second hand. Better than the Z906 and IMO unless you spend £500 you wont get a better sounding 5.1 system

I have actually stumbled across those on the bay and theres a set with 0 bids only an hours drive away from me ending soon. I'll see what kind of price they get upto and I might go for them.
