Not strictly a sound card question, but this seems like the best place to ask...

I am retiring an old Denon 5.1 amp and looking to replace it with an amp that only has digital inputs (HDMI, coax or optical).

So, if I wanted to attach my gaming PC to the amp using an HDMI cable from my GTX970, is it capable of outputting 5.1 sound from games?

The new potential amp accepts "multi-channel linear PCM digital audio signals (192 kHz or less) for up to 8 channels" through its HDMI inputs.

Can the surround sound from games be sent as 5.1 PCM through the GTX970 to the amp or am I confused?!

Many thanks.

Thanks, James.

I haven't looked into this sort of stuff since it involved Dolby Digital Live encoding and sending signals via SPDIF, HDMI seems a lot simpler.

Presumably this works for all games, it's not a case of only certain audio being compatible?

Yeah it's compatible with everything :) Like you said, previously we needed DDLive or DTS interactive as they were the only way to get multi channel over spdif but they had their drawbacks (lossy encoding, audiable lag etc.).

hdmi sound devices on modern gpu's just present themselves as multi channel playback devices and output LPCM - no encoding needed, straight mutli-channel pcm output for everything :)
