5.1 Sound Issues

I seem to be having a few issues playing my games in 5.1 surround sound. I can play them fine in 2.1. But as soon as I change to 5.1 the voices sounds disappear?

It has happened in games like Fallout3, Far Cry 2, Assassins Creed. Grid, and a couple of others.

So are games not supporting 5.1 anymore, or is it my hardware that is a bit too outdated??

Soundcard - Audigy 4 Pro (with external box)
Speakers - Logitech Z-5500

Have you forgot to set your Z5500 @ direct (effect), eg. is it stuck on stereo or stereo x2 :p ? I sometimes forget turning it back from stereox2 with music to direct for games...

It should be absolutely fine, the standard for games now is 5.1 really, 2 channels ruins the gaming experience in many games as it ruins the atmosphere... Fallout 3 and FC2 definitely have working 5.1 for me ( Audigy 2 ZS + z5500's).
Grid needs patch 1.2 for sound to work in 5.1, version 1.0 only has stereo.

I have it set on my Logitech console as

Input: Optical
Effect DPLII Music

Is this where I am failling?

Oh, you are using a digital link, erm I'm not sure:

If you can change the effect to direct, it should be like that I think, but I'm not sure as I use a conventional analog cable not an optical or coax and I know the z5500 console behaves differently with analog and digital signals...

Make sure your windows and creative settings are set @ 5.1, and your logitech to direct...

Does 5.1 work properly if you use vista's built-in speaker test?
Atm you have your logitech set to dolby pro logic II music though, that completely ignores what gets sent to the rears and center, it only uses the 2 stereo channels and mixes it into 5.1... You at least need to change the effect to direct...

Edit:
Yeah I'm pretty sure it's that, press effect a few times on your z5500 channel till it's back on ''6ch direct'' or something similar, dolby pro logic is only for non 5.1 signals to upmix it into 5.1...

When I play music with my current settings it works great in 5.1. But when I go into the Vista sound Control, it will only detects a 2.1 speaker setup, and there is no sound when Vista does its sound test apart from the 2.1 speakers.

Edit: Vista knows there 5 speakers, but will not play a sound when testing the setup???

Yes I know, change the pro logic II music mode to direct for games and windows, and back to pro logic 2 for music...
You can't expect 5.1 to work properly if the speakers ignore what the soundcard tells the center and rears to do, the speakers when set in dolby pro logic II mode ( both the film and music modes) completely ignore any channels than front left and right, and 5.1 games do not send everything to those 2 speakers, they send them directly to the center or rears for example...
Dolby pro logic 2 modes remix the 2.0 signal into 5.1...
But if it gets a 5.1 signal, it still ignores all channels except the 2 front ones...

I hope it's understandable? You can't expect games to work properly if you set the z5500 to mix the 2 front channels into 5.1 with dolby pro logic, and ignore the rest... If you want DPLII music for music, then just change it whenever you listen to music, for games and windows you should use the normal mode... The pro logic modes are to upmix NON 5.1 things like music or some films into 5.1...

Hmm not 100% on this but unless your card can do DDL (Dolby digital live) encoding, which I don't think an Audigy 4 Pro can do, your not going to get 5.1 over optical only 2.1 at best sorry :(.
