Hello guys, not sure if this is the right section for posting this, but here it goes.

A friend of mine bought the Philips 5.1 system from overclockers to connect with his MacBookPro. Thing is when he got them, he called me to instal them, and I noticed he didn’t have a 5.1 support. I searched on google and couldn’t come across any 5.1 support for macs, apart from a TOSHLINK cable i think it was callled, which basically utilizes the optical output from the Mac(?) but the speakers don’t have such an input.

So what can I tell him to do? Best bet so far is to buy three splitters, connect the first one onto the MBP then the other two onto the first splitter and then the speakers onto those.

Anyone knows if there’s an external solution for this? I only came across the Creative external USB 5.1 card which only supports Windows OS(as said on their page)

Apple TV.

What?

Anyway moving on...

The 3.5mm headphone socket supports surround sound via TOSLink. Splitting the analogue output is going to do nothing.

Return the speakers under DSA if you can and get one that has a optical input and an 3.5mm -> TOSLink cable and boom surround sound away.

Have you used Audio MIDI Setup?

With the optical SPDIF connected, you should be able to select anything from mono upwards..

Under the audio window in Audio MIDI Setup, have a look under the "Configure Speakers" settings, select multi-channel and then you'll see a new drop down appear which has the type of output you want. I notice theres 5.1 and 7.1 etc in that list..

Sorry I can't test it more than that as I've only got stereo things!

Sorry, I think I miss read.

What input have the speakers?

You can get optical to coaxial converters if they have a coaxial input.

I know you can stream 5.1 from Mac or PC to Apple TV, which does 5.1 via optical out. You then can connect to a surround sound system.
