5.1 speakers came without subwoofer

GUYS;
your all being jassive batty's for assuming that I did not read the fine print because I actually did.

I was wondering however if it is 100% necessary to purchase a subwoofer?

OP, do you have something already that you were going to connect these speakers too?

gaming computer I am building next week.

I was wondering if I should buy a 5.1 soundcard though..

...

GUYS;
I appreciate the helpful responses.

To those who are being rude: your being jassive batty's for assuming that I did not read the fine print because I actually did.

You will need an amplifier 1st. You can't just connect passive speakers to a sound card.
a wahhh??

Sounds like now I have to put forth even more cashting :)

That's fair enough, apologies for any offence.

Yes, those towers will produce no lower frequencies. Not only are they incapable, because they have no drivers that are large enough, but in a 5.1 setup, all low frequencies are sent to the subwoofer. Only way you can get away with no subwoofer in a 5.1 setup, is if the front speakers have fairly big woofers.

Cheers:

Ok I am thinking of purchasing this as my sub:

That's no use. You can only use that with the correct DVD player system it was designed for.

I'm sorry to say, but you have bought something without really understanding what you have bought. The fact you didn't know what an amplifier was, when I mentioned it, shows this.

I don't wish to be mean, but you should really understand what you are buying, before you buy it. This applies to many people though, probably too many. Many times I've seen people buy passive speakers, then expect them to connect direct to a sound card.

You would either have to buy a 2nd hand AV receiver/amplifier, or a new one. The only other option is to find a similar subwoofer to the one you link. That has a 5.1 amplifier built in, but it would need to be indepedant, and not need a DVD player/unit in order to function. Had you known all this before hand, you could have bought something which came with the subwoofer and amplifier, which ultimately, would have been cheaper.

Always understand what you are buying, before you buy it. This applies to everyone.
damn... I guess I will have to just return my order.

yeah buy a sub and amp, but make sure the sub will work with the amp, and see if the sub is passive or active

I am way out of my league on this one.

If anyone could spec me a solution, I would be incredibly grateful.

It appears that I have 2 options:

1) Pay shipping to return the speakers (I don't want to do that because the speakers look great :( )

2) Someone Audiophile specs me a solution and I throw down some cash to solve the problem ! :D
