Hi,

I am looking for a set of 5.1 speakers, they need to have a digital input though as I am going to pair them with a titanium hd which does not have all the required analogue jacks for analogue 5.1 speakers.

I would like to get something good to go with my awesome sound card, but the Z906 I've seen costs nearly £300 and its a bit too lucrative for me.

I was wondering are there any budget options? Is there some kind of adapter I can get for a analogue 5.1 speaker set so that they will work with my soundcards digital input? Or am I talking rubbish there.

Is there a set of 5.1 speakers cheaper than the Z906 that has a digital input? I would also consider second hand.

Thanks :)

Thanks, would never have considered a 2.1 set.

Would they be a good upgrade from a creative t20, or would it be a "sidestep"? Cheers.

I quite like the idea of being surrounded with sound though, and I have the room space.

Would it be possible to use a home theatre system meant for a TV?

Is that a good idea.

Would any home theatre with optical input work. Thanks again

No, pc only.

Looking at the Panasonic sc-xh150 it has a optical input, so this would work ok?

Do you think I should spend more or would this be good.

i have similar system from samsung and found out that 5.1 is only avaible when i use the dvd player. It also lacks any hd audio features so you are limited to just 5.1 surround if it works through the optical.

After doing some reading I've decided to opt for a quality 2.1 system, possibly the harmon kardon soundsticks iii.

Thanks for the input elmuzzy66 + shoosh.

You could go for one of those all in one DVD type systems with an optical in, but they are not really that good. You are far better off buying 2.0/2.1 speakers that will not only use the sound quality your sound card is capable of, but will also be darn sight better quality speakers. As I told you in your other thread, your £140 sound card does nothing at all to improve the sound quality when using digital connection. It is just acting as a transport for the digital data.

If you use speakers and headphones via digital connection to the card, you might as well sell it, and buy something cheaper. The sound card only comes into it's own when using analogue connection.

You did say you mainly use headphones. I'm hoping you mean decent analogue ones, and not those Tritton's. Why are so many people concerned about getting digital connection to headphones and speakers, then go and buy an expensive stereo sound card. That is just as pointless as buying a really nice plasma TV, just to watch Eastenders.

If your headphones are indeed those Tritton's, I'd buy a decent set of 2.1 speakers. 2.0/stereo would be better, but as these are likely for gaming, you are likely going to want the bass that a subwoofer provides. For music though, good stereo speakers will always be better.

If you do have some decent analogue headphones, that make use of your sound card, then buying any speakers with a digital connection, is not so bad. You are still going to get the same problem of a load of rubbish speakers, unless you can afford to spend considerably more money, or find some good second hand bargains. Used Logitech Z5500's, might be an idea.
