So i'm planning on getting a surround sound set up soon, i've decided between either the SONY STRDH810 or the ONKYO TXSR309 both seem to get good reviews in the lower end market does anyone know which is best?
now speakers is where i'm stuck at, what i originally wanted was to buy my own speakers bit by bit, but i'm getting a bit confused, i dont really want a subwoofer i actually respect my neighbours so it is kinda outta the question, but then again i could turn the bass right down, but would a speaker package like the Cambridge Audio Lusso's or Soundwares sound better than what i'm planning below.

I was looking at the WHARFEDALE CR30.4 for my front speakers, i'm led to believe by the internet if i don't want a subwoofer these floorstanders will produce enough bass to satisfy my needs and still sound pretty smooth and clear (currently have some edifier 1600t and i'm more than happy with the sound/bass they produce) then i was looking at maybe getting some Wharfedale DIAMONDS 9.0 for my rears and i'm not sure about the centre, probably a CAMBRIDGE AUDIO S50...

Would this work as a setup or am i missing something about it that wont work?

thanks in advance

p.s. i have a small front room

The sub-sat (Lusso/Soundwares etc) systems rely really heavily on the sub for most of the frequency range from male vocal down. It'll be very hard to make that kind of kit work if you need to keep the bass low. Don't buy a sub-sat kit if that is your restriction.

The floor standers are a better bet for you. You won't get earth-shattering bass, but then again you won't end up with World War III with your neighbours either.

Centre speaker.....be careful here. The centre is responsible for about 70% of all the sound your HT system will produce. The general advice is to match the voicing of the centre and L&R speakers as closely as possible. Buying from the same manufacturer, and within the same range, is a start. So have a look at Wharfedale centre speakers.

Receivers - both are good. Choose the one that gives you the features you really need. If the room is small then you don't need 7.1

Yeah i was looking at them actually look excellent, i might have a word with you about them if they are still available in a couple of weeks, just dont really want a sub, but still we'll see

Thanks Lucid, by the time i have bought the slightly more expensive than planned WD centre i might aswell go for the Cambridge audio speaker set up Richer sounds has on offer for £400

If i decide to go bit by bit with the speakers e.g. buy front first then centre then rears am i right in thinking that the front on there own wont preform very well for voices or will the amps be able to compensate for that?

The fronts will do okay for voices until you get a centre as long as the speakers aren't in daft places.
