Hi Everyone,

I'm looking for a new 5.1 system, ideally one where the receiver is in the subwoofer. The reason is that I love my slimline canteliever stand but it won't hold a big amp. In fact, it won't hold much of anything.

Obviously the answer is the Onkyo HDX but it's getting a bit long in the tooth now.

any others on the market?

Thanks!

Having all wiring sent to your sub doesn't seem that smart, it's usually off to one side, so that means sending all HDMI cables to it, then back to your TV.
I would recommend a Manantz NR AVR if you want something small.

What about the center speaker, that needs to go below the TV, so if your stands lacks a shelf then center speakers isn't in the ideal location. I'd buy something like this place it below your TV for the center and the Marantz NR

Also if that Onkyo HDX fails it's a whole new unit, sub, AVR system. But if you get a AVR and subwoofer if one fails just replace that component.

Plus if that sub/av unit goes down you've got a useless part, you can't simply re-use or replace that faulty item.
Just buy standard av components.

Other than one of those blu ray player surround systems where the player is also the amp, I cant think of one other than the Onkyo you have mentioned.

A soundbar with hdmi input and simulated 5.1 perhaps? Wouldn't be my choice though!

yup like Arcam Solo. But those are expensive, plus all that heat in a little box, near optical pickup...
I guess if one has class D amps then it's not too bad

AVR changes often though, new HDMI spec, new BD players, 4K...would you want to be locked into one where both AVR & BD are in one unit?
