I'm in the process of overhauling a new living room, chance to do ceiling work is now so I'm considering installing two ceiling speakers laid out for Dolby Atmos.

Space wise the room isn't ideal h (4.5m x 3.2m) which is why I'd struggle for 7.1, I was hoping going 5.1.2 would add positively but the more I'm reading the more I'm hearing "5.1.4 or don't bother", for a room of this size though, is 5.1.2 enough?

Interested to hear people who've installed it in similar circumstances.

If I were you I would do it because you have the chance. Ceiling speakers above your main seating area would be the best bet IMHO. If you dont you will probably regret it as unlike a lot of people you had the chance to put them in the ceiling and you didnt.

My living room is bigger than yours by a bit and I have upfiring (5.1.2) front L/R speakers and I can tell the difference when say watching Avengers Endgame or Infinity Wars. Thor Ragnarok was a good example too. Not as good as dedicated ceiling speakers which would give an even better experience.

how many speakers does an IMAX cinema have?

I'd say go for it put 4 in the ceiling and do 7.1.4

I've thought about atmos myself but room layout doesn't suit and I doubt I'd see the benefit due to seating position being offset to the side. I have 5.1 and an atmos 4K AVR. So I just need the speakers which isn't a huge outlay but for me I would never get proper use of them to be worthwhile. I use that room maybe once every 3-4 weeks.

Go for it. I have a slight longer room but similar width. I have 2 X wedge shaped speakers at the ceiling/wall join firing down just in front of seating position.
There are useful suggestions on the Dolby Atmos website for positioning.
Can run it 5.1.2.or 7.1 depending on what I am watching.

The DOLBY Atmos demos are great if you want to test the difference. Not a massive amount of content around if you mostly stream your viewing content. Great for the few Dolby Atmos video games out.

Got a 5.2.4 system, with the .4 being in ceiling speakers, ran in the same room without Atmos for a few years so had a good baseline, impressed with the Atmos effect was worth the hassle installing.

Yeah the demo's are great even with only 2 up firing ones when a jet roars over your head you can really tell the difference as I tested it with and without them so it is worth thinking about.
I get Dolby Atmos with my BT Box (which did catch me by surprise when I first found out) and of course 4k discs.

I've got a 5.2.2 Setup - my living room is bigger but my atmos speakers are fitted close to the skirting on the wall I am facing the screen is on. They are firing downward at an angle.

And honestly, I am really glad I did it. ATMOS to me is very subtle and surreal and it "completes" the sound bubble you create with the 5.1 - So go for it.

Do it now is the time , i did it when i decorated . My room layout isnt optimal but fitted MA speakers with the ability to angle the drivers . It fills the room and enhances the sense of direction . Worth the effort hands down .

Like someone above, have a 5.2.2 system, the atmos speaker are angled down and centred towards the listening potion. I do imagine a .4 atmos setup and more so one in the ceiling will be neat, but even as it is, it does add a subtle element when atmos is supported.

Don't know about your amp, but use a STR-1080 and even for content which does not support atmos specifically, can be set up so that sound is seemingly split and some elements are sent to the speakers. Recently playing Ace Combat for example, the flying under the clouds and hearing thunder and lightning coming from above you was absolutely awesome. IMO worth getting atmos, even for .2 and more so as your doing your living room up anyways
