Currently got some 4.1's and looking at upgrading with a budget about £100.
I'm thinking of either going 5.1 or possibly a better quality 2.1. Do people think a 5.1 setup is worthwhile on a desk or should the rear speaker really be sitting behind you?
I'm looking at getting the acoustic energy aego m but whats putting me off is the volume control seems to be on the sub, surely if this is located under your desk its a bit awkward to reach?

You can't expect decent surround sound if you don't position them correctly :p

I've never really found surround sound that good anyway, much prefer my simple stereo hifi, but then I mostly listen to music and play CS:S.

Don't know how I'd live without surround sound now. I have owned the Gigaworks S750 7.1's for 3 years and they're very cool. The 5.1 version of the gigaworks looks very good too, but yes, make sure you position them properly. As for cheap surround sound, don't bother. Either go for a highend Logitech setup or Creative.

There's no point in getting 5.1 if you can't position them behind you. That's the whole idea of surround sound. Get a really nice 2.1 system instead if you can't position 5.1's properly

As everyone is saying - position is the key.

I bought a surround sound setup when I had the space to put the rears well behind me and the front's well off to the side, but for the past year (I moved) they've all been sat on my desk which defeats the object, also takes up a lot of desk space.

I finally went out and replaced them today - see here:

Thats why you have the volume up to max constantly and adjust the volume on your pc?

Anyways I'd say a decent 2.1 system is better, no point going 5.1 or 7.1 unless you can afford a decent system.
